Cool video, my 2011 SS rental was a bit slow on the tap shift but this seems to be far more improved.
I wonder how the ZL1 will do when someone installs a torque converter in it for the 1st time... those CTS-V guys are saying the all get AT least a .5 decrease in there 1/4 mile times. When I do order mine, I am going with the auto for sure! :chevy: a smaller pulley change will happen as well, har har har.... |

Yet more money to spend to get the tapshift to respond faster.

That video looks great!
I'm currently driving a Lexus isF, and the auto trans in this car is just fantastic! It is an 8sp auto and the shifts are quick...very quick and I doubt any human would be able to shift much faster. In fact it's better to just let it shift on it's own. And it downshifts very nicely...it will even blip on a downshift. I hope the auto trans in the ZL1 is the same...it would make people think twice about getting a manual if the car will be a DD. I know some people will not agree with me, so my only advice would be to stop at your nearest Lexus dealership and test drive the isF and see for your self. I am in no way pushing the isF, just using it as a bench mark in today's automatic transmission technology. With that said, the ZL1 will spank the isF all day long with whatever tranny is in it! |
For those wanting this retrofit for the 2010-2012 V8 and V6 Camaros, its not the same transmission. That transmission is the 6L80. The one in the ZL1 is the 6L90, which is based on the 6L80, but a different transmission with different software. They may be able to re-design some pieces in the 6L80 and then change the software. Probably not worth it to GM. On the flipside, they could put the 6L90 in those cars starting in 2013, but again, what's the cost and is it worth it.

IMO if the 6L90 with the new programing is anything like the current SS and LT with the adaptive Sport mode ... OMG that thing will be crazy fun to drive. The current A6 trans being adaptive, when you start hammering on the car, the trans acts in kind. It will adjust it's shift patterns based on how you are driving it. The current version I use Sport mode more so that the Drive or Manual modes in my wife's car. Mine is the LS3, so it acts a little different ... :D

This is really really making me consider going with an auto instead of M6. Just seems like too much fun to pass up with this newer designed faster tap shifting. My old SS was an M6 and it was really annoying in stop and go traffic. How do you current tap-shift users like going through the gears with the steering wheel controls compared to shifting manually with M6? Any of you drive on many road course tracks with it?

ZL1 on the video shifts much faster than my 2012 2ss auto does.
even some of dealer mechanics r saying 2012 ss auto supposed to be shifts faster than 2010-2011 and competitive mode has faster and farmer felling. so I tested with competitive mode, and all off, and feels like doing faster(ish) shift on competitive mode, but I would say I "kinda" feel because Im paying attention. I hope there will be some kinda updates for auto programs and magnetic ride. I'll try take video soon. |
