Possible to add Homelink / Auto Dimming Mirror to 1SS

I have a SIM 1SS. The Chevy SSR that I traded in on this Camaro had an auto dimming rear view mirror and homelink garage door remote in the mirror.

I see that the Camaro homelink is built into the headliner near the dome light switch/passenger air bag lights.

Question 1:

Can the homelink transmitter be purchased by itself as a stand alone item/part and can it be installed into the 1SS (wiring present?)?

Question 2:

I know the 2SS rear view mirror is larger than the 1SS mirror, but the auto dimming feature is something I would like to have again. Does the auto dimming OnStart mirror from the 2SS plug into the same wiring harness as the basic 1SS OnStar mirror?

Any detailed info would be a great help (part numbers)!

Thanks

Robert

I may have found my own answer to the auto dimming mirror question.

The 50-GENK6 mirror is an Gentex auto dimming OnStar mirror that is reported to be an plug-and-play replacement mirror for any car with factory OnStar.

I've ordered it and I shall see of that claim is true.

shiftz33 06-13-2009 01:25 AM

The claim about it plugging right in was false.

The Camaro appears to have a unique wiring harness for the OnStar mirror. The 50-GENK6 mirror will not connect to the Camaro mirror harness without some sort of adapter.

I've sent an email to the selling company to see if they have any way to make this work, otherwise I'll have to return it.

shiftz33 06-15-2009 01:00 PM

The company I purchased the mirror through has put me in contact with Mito Corp.

A couple people at Mito Corp are looking into what I'll need to do to create a wiring harness that will adapt the Camaro wiring harness plug (near the head liner) to one that is compatible with the "standard" OnStar Gentex mirror plug which is on the backside of the mirror.

I'll post the results when I have them.....

Xmicro_SS 06-15-2009 01:05 PM

You must also be able to get the homelink as well. What did you find out?

shiftz33 06-15-2009 06:43 PM

The parts department where I purchased the Camaro is looking up the GM supplied auto dimming mirror part number along with the homelink part number.

There is no homeline/onstar/auto dimming mirror made by Gentex. With that in mind, all I can do is add the auto dimming feature via the mirror (of course) and the homelink is a separate panel/module in the headliner.

I'll post all of the info I get on this topic as soon as I get it.

Part Numbers

The parts department has located what they believe to be the part numbers for the auto dimming mirror and universal remote (homelink) console

Homelink (console): 92235696 (Color - Black)
OnStar Auto Dimming Mirror: 13503048

I'm having them order the console to try and get homelink into my 1SS.

I'm holding off on the mirror since I'm trying to get Mito Corp to figure out a wiring harness adapter for the 50-GENK6A mirror that I have in my possession.

That's all I have for now.....

shiftz33 06-20-2009 12:44 AM

Homelink (console): 92235696 (Color - Black)

4 Attachment(s)
I received a call today that the console that I ordered was in.

I picked up the part and it sure enough did have the Homelink transmitter.

When I arrived home, I removed the existing console (4 snaps and two screws [behind the dome light]).

I found that there was NO wiring harness connection for the Homelink unit. :mad0260: It seems the 1SS wiring harness is feature specific and if the Homelink unit is not included in the car at the factory the harness does not include a connector for it. It's a flat edged connector as well making it even more fun to connect.

I identified the 12 volt power and ground connectors on the homelink unit (took some serious examination of the circuit board. I soldered on two wire leads to the connector leads coming out of the homelink unit. I wired up the 12 volt side to a switched power lead that is present in the mirror harness (which runs right by this area / pink wire next to green wire on the car side of the mirror connector) and I placed a fuse in the wire lead to make sure I didn't blow anything.

About 1 hours later I have a 1SS with a Homelink transmitter in it. Since it's using a switched 12 volt power lead, it only works with the ignition switch is on, but that's not really a problem.

What fun that was!!

The status of the 50-GENK6A mirror install is that Mito Corp is now creating a wiring harness that will connect the mirror to the GM harness connector. After I inquired about the wiring "issue", the found out that many of the current GM vehicles are using the new style wiring and this was a task they needed to go through anyway to make their mirrors compatible with current GM vehicles. More on this part of this topic next week....

Here are some pictures of the console

Pic 1) Part Number label on box for the new console with Homelink transmitter

Pic 2) Rear view of new console (Homelink in lower left corner)

Pic 3) Close up of the homelink portion of the console (connector near my thumb in the picture) - Ground = Connector near center, 12 volt = left most connector

I hope that helps someone else!

Hi Shift33,
I was wondering what the homelink console cost?

I don't have my car yet, but this is one option I would like to add also.

Thanks,
Greg

i went to a local wrecking yard and got 4 different mirrors. (i deal with this yard all the time so they let me borrow them) as long as the mirrors are 2008 2009 . you have to rewire the plug though. i was able to put a auto dimminng mirror with onstar in the camaro with no probs. the other 3 mirrors i tried were plain onstar(envoy), plain auto diming, onstar(envoy) .autodimming with the airbag info in it (this was aout of a silverado). they all have the temp and compass in them. the compass works but the temp you need the sending unit..

JDBeck23 07-04-2009 09:35 AM

How big was the envoy mirror?? Im thinking about getting rid of my auto dimming mirror since I've got tint, I dont really want the side mirror to dim anymore.

Anyone wanna trade?? =o)

Camarofan69 07-04-2009 12:16 PM

ILL TRADE YA

Giving up on 50-GENK6A mirror install

The Gentex 50-GENK6A mirror will not plug into the Camaro nor any other recent GM vehicle because GM has changed the wiring harness the mirror connects to.

Mito Corp is "working" on the wiring harness change but it seems to be taking a very long time. I'm returning the 50-GENK6A mirror and I guess I'll be purchasing the GM 13503048 mirror.

aldaran 08-10-2009 10:29 PM

Thanks for all the information. I'm planning on getting a 1SS as well, and would love the auto-dimming mirror. The homelink also sounds like a great add-on.

shiftz33 08-20-2009 06:14 PM

Auto dimming mirror installation complete

I sent the Gentex 50-GENK6A mirror back to Mito Corp since Mito Corp could not deliver a wiring harness patch cable to make the older style connecter on the mirror connect to the new style connector present in the 2010 Camaro. I waited a LONG time for this cable and they were still several weeks away from having one.

I then checked with three different Chevy parts departments to confirm what part number was correct for the OnStar capable auto dimming mirror found in the 2LT/2SS Camaros. It is 13503048.

I ordered the 13503048 mirror from gmpartsdirect.com for a total of $103.60 (shipped). I just received it today and installed it in about 5 minutes. I pulled the Camaro out of the garage and tested the OnStar button and it worked.

I pulled the Camaro back into the garage and closed the garage door (to simulate night time). I used a flash light as my "light source from behind" to see if the mirror did in fact "dim". It did.

Success!

If you have a LS/1LT/1SS with a flip mirror, you can purchase GM mirror 13503048 to get the same mirror found in the 2LT/2SS Camaros.

The auto dimming mirror is "bigger" (height) than the flip mirror, but only by a 1/4". It really didn't seem like a huge change (to me).

So there you go.... :)

aldaran 09-16-2009 02:07 PM

Great! Now I can add it to my future car without paying a lot on getting the next trim level.

Matt'sSS 09-16-2009 03:21 PM

Good info on everything!

Haven't done much night driving yet, but hoping the tint will do the trick. Too bad the home link connector was not there.

Thanks for all your great info it really helped me a lot. I followed your directions and now all i have to do is wire up the homelink. I just don't know where to solder on to the homelink.:iono: Here is a pic of it. If you could show me where to solder it would help me a lot. Thanks.

Awesome job Shiftz!!! Thanks for the hard work!

In the picture with the homelink unit cover open, the left most pin is negative and the right most pin is the 12v positive.

Thanks. Do i need to solder wire on other side:iono:.
Or is the one side good enough.

billyspeed 12-18-2009 05:19 PM

does anybody no if the mirror from other gms will work ? years/models ??

Nutbutt 12-19-2009 07:52 AM

Great Info, I can't thank the people of Camaro5 enough. My LS has been transformed into the car I really want with only the mods I want at less than half the cost of the 2LT/RS options ! By the end of the holidays most changes should be done (If this cold weather breaks in the northeast) and I'll get to drive my car on the nice days again !

Cj_ 05-02-2010 12:43 PM

Does anyone know if you can just get the homelink without the console? I have the opening for the homelink in the console, just not the homelink. (Sunroof console)

littleman54321 05-09-2010 06:07 PM

So...stupid question. If the right most-connector in the picture gets connected to the pink wire, where does the left most connector get connected to? A ground wire in that same area?

http://strategixit.com/Misc/homelink.png

shiftz33 05-10-2010 06:23 PM

I located a hole in the roof support panel very near the homelink unit that I ended up putting a short screw into to connect my negative wire lead to. Just be careful in selecting a screw short enough to not hit the outer roof panel itself. I scraped a little paint away from the metal to allow the connector to get a good solid connection for the ground wire.

I only ran one wire forward to the pink wire for the switched 12v power supply.

Sigh. I think I may have screwed up my homelink module. My soldering job was terrible. Pics attached, and links to really huge high quality pics too. (Just so you can see how awesome my soldering is). I really hope that's not the case....but it looks pretty bad in the pics. :mad0260::cry: In the rare event that's not what was wrong, I found 2 pink wires in that harness. I tried both, and I never could get the LED on the homelink to light up. I suppose it's possible that I didn't have it grounded well too. I just had it touching the painted part of the roof as daylight was running out.

littleman54321 05-14-2010 04:38 PM

Well, decided to call my electrician friend for some hep. He resoldered the wires, and helped me splice the leads into the pink +12 and the black ground. Works fine. WOO! No more rolling my window down, opening the door and leaning out so I can punch in the code....

Darth Martel 05-19-2010 09:38 AM

I've had some requests to do some research into this as people with 1SS's are wanting to add these and not necessarily have to solder onto the module's board. I've found the part # of the connector and terminals. This is going to be a mod as opposed to a harness replacement. I don't have a 2SS harness to go from but, I'm guessing that there's a solder splice of the power and ground to the harness somewhere in the roof area for the homelink switches. The mod would consist of the connector I provide with the power and ground wires and a couple butt crimps to splice into the existing wires. I need to find out how many people would be interested in this so I can inquire about getting the connector. You can either PM me or post your interest in this thread.

thanks

Coop 05-19-2010 09:49 AM

Go for it Darth.

jtzako 05-19-2010 10:11 AM

Is it possible to replace the harness? It seems to me that would be the best way to go if we know the part# and if it does not require removing some sort of crazy parts of the car to get to.

Darth Martel 05-19-2010 11:17 AM

The harness goes from the roof to behind the dash. There is no way in hell I'd want to take all that apart just to put in a built in garage door opener. If it was just a simple harness replacement that would have been my first suggestion. Modding the existing harness is unfortunately the only way to go, as far as I know. I still need to open up my panel and look for myself. My preliminary research indicates that it's going to be a mod situation though.

I would also be interested...Jonathan is the man!!

Darth Martel 05-26-2010 07:15 AM

I got the connectors for this but no pins. I'm working on a solution. I've got to build a few more Aux Gauge harnesses so, I'll try to fit in finding a solution to this as well over the next few days. I'll keep everybody updated.

****edit

waiting on Delphi/Packard to get back with me on the pins. I originally had my parts lady try to go through them but, I just think she checked the website and didn't find them. The girl I talked to at Delphi couldn't find them in the databases she has so she sent one of the component engineers my info and what I was looking for. Hopefully, he can find them for me and get me some samples. If that fails then I'm going to have to try and rig something up using the connector. I'm not giving up. Just need more time.

luke.st.john 05-30-2010 11:34 PM

Hey, you didn't by chance take a few photo's of the connector for your replacement mirror did you? I have a 2SS and am thinking of getting a LCD enabled mirror from an acadia and installing it for a back up camera but am trying to find whatever details I can on the wiring of the stock mirror first.

Cheers.

I finally got a response from Delphi/Packard and they're shipping me some terminals for the connector. I'll just be making a simple kit for these for you to splice crimp splice into the existing wires for power and then simply plug into the homelink board as originally intended. Sorry about the crimp splice but, that's the only way I have to tap into power. Whoever is interested in one of these please send me a PM.

thanks

Darth

Darth Martel 06-07-2010 01:08 PM

Ask and ye shall receive. Here are the mod harnesses. This isn't anything extravagant. It's just a two wire thing. It's the homelink connector with the two terminals populated and the wires measuring about 9 inches (which should give you plenty of room to work with) and with spade terminals on the end. Also included are the crimp splices. Simply crimp these onto the appropriate wires and then plug in the spade terminals. Here are a couple pictures of what I came up with.

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...l75/photo1.jpg

I made a couple of these already, as you can see, so these are ready to ship out. I have enough for 6 total. Those interested can PM me and we can discuss a price.
