93 V6 engine shuts off

So I bought my son a 93 Camaro with 73k miles on it.
we have had it for about 3 months, but yesterday the car shut off on him in a drive thru getting food. He said he was able to restart it, it sounded rough, and I thought maybe a spark plug went bad. (i dont know, not a mechanic)
so we went to pick the car up the next day, and it cranked right up. but when he drives it, it randomly was shutting off.
The check gauges light comes on. Also he started to smell a burning smell after he drove it some. Like burning wire or something. The radio doesn't cut off when it cuts off. Just the engine.

Any ideas what this could be?:noidea:

Picture below is where i saw smoke curling up.

I look into threads just out of curiosity and i'd be in the same boat as you. i'm not a mechanic and i'd probably look for one.

only other suggestion is to maybe buy one of those code scanner thingies to check what codes it is throwing.

sorry I can't be of any real help

Looks like the distributor coil pack. Not sure if there is an ignition module in it around it or built into it but that may be your issue.. I have an 87 Ford Crown vic and the ignition module went and the car just stopped dead on the highway .. after a few mins i would wait and it would start but it had to be replaced ..

Could be this or it could be a short in the wiring harness. But being that the engine just dies but cranks (I'm assuming?) and runs rough I'm thinking that could be either an intermittent failure of the coil or old wiring. Sounds like a classic misfire until the burning wire smell.

I'd pull the plugs and check them for burns. Case seal on that coil probably got weak and started leaking.

Turn off your A/C and see if that helps. Seems strange, but it worked for me! My parents helped me with that. It was something related to my A/C.
