Autobot (Marketing) Question

Its well documented the place our Rival Mustangs have in pop culture due to movies like Bullit, various Bond movies, and television shows.

Is it possible that just ONE Michael Bay movie franchise like Transformers has trumped ALL of that?

discuss...

scythezo6 06-30-2011 04:18 PM

I'm going back to work. lol.

By this, and Michael Bay logic, our Camaros will be exploding in the near future.... xD

Splitter 06-30-2011 07:06 PM

I saw a Mustang with an Autobot sticker on it.

It was a sick stang so I didn't mention anything to the owner.

When i think of a mustang no real big block buster movie comes to my mind but when i think of a camaro, Transformers.

Kahdir 06-30-2011 08:16 PM

I don't know... I really like the first 5 min. of "I am Legend"... hearing that supercharger wine through Central Park :D

RJNavarrete 06-30-2011 08:44 PM

I'm sorry but Gone in 60 Seconds > Transformers. Easily.

I love my car, and enjoy the Transformer movies, but the car chase in "Bullitt" will always stand as the best, IMO.

I liked the Mustang in the Night Rider miniseries a few years ago. I wish the show would have been better.

+1

I forgot about "I Am Legend," that was pretty cool. Hunting in a pony car is almost worth the zombie apocalypse... but not what happened to the poor dog.

this is exactly what I mean...Im not for disrespecting a 'stangs place in pop culture...its pretty well entrenched...its just the power of today's blockbuster movies that impresses me

CamaroKid300 06-30-2011 11:37 PM

Man all of you are wrong!

Fast and furious' with all the rice wagons > transformers > Gone in 60 sec > I am legend > any other car movie.

PSYCH.

I'm going back to watching TV. ;)

Camaro FTW

That's ridiculous! I mean WHO would be dumb enough to let a movie influence how they feel about their car... http://tapatalk.com/mu/a68908da-57a0-9f67.jpg

not what Im sayin at all. Its like any electrion, 40% will always go one way (stang) and 40% will always go the other (camaro). Advertising and Marketing, and product placement will be what is used to sway the other 20%.

What Im askin is, "is the fact that Camaro sales are thru the roof right now largely attributable to an ultimate coup (not coupe) in product placement in a movie?"

this. that mustang looked so sick too.

acatlover13 07-01-2011 12:06 PM

It's going to be a long time before a more iconic "car" movie comes around than Smokey & the Bandit.

You can't tell me that EVERYONE--young & old alike don't think of S & B when they see a late 70's TransAm with that screamin' eagle on the hood. Yes...5th Gen Camaros/Transformers is close, and the Mustang/Shelby will invoke both Bullit & Gone in 60 seconds in a car enthusiasts brain.

But no car/movie combo will ever be as ingrained in our minds as Smokey & the Bandit...IMHO.

And to the product placement question....yes. Cool cars in cool movies will have people going out and at least wanting if not actually buying that car. After I saw Fast Five, I told my husband, "If those new Chargers really do have enough power to pull a safe out of a concrete wall....that will be my next 4 door."

heRS 07-01-2011 12:18 PM

You can't see a Charger without thinking about the Dukes of Hazzard now, admit it...

...well said. This is the point Im gettin at. A Camaro never had "iconic" cred. These movies may have had enough reach to trump all the cred held by Mustangs due to movies like Bullit, etc...

=Stephens= 07-01-2011 12:28 PM

So, I went to Transformers 3 last night. I parked so when you pulled up, you could see my car right away. I then waited outside for a bit til the movie started. As I was waiting, I counted 20 people stopped and took a photo of my car with their phones. And mine isn't even yellow! How cool is that?

SlingShot 07-01-2011 12:33 PM

IMO the best car movies ever, Vanishing Point, Bullit, Gone in 60 Seconds (both versions), Transformers ...

Xello 07-01-2011 12:44 PM

Need a Camaros in the movies fix? Check this site out. http://www.imcdb.org/vehicles.php?ma...=Camaro&page=1

Most are fleeting moments of Camaros but still fun to browse through. Who would of thought there was a Camaro in "Attack of the 60 foot Centerfolds"?

JetBlackStealth6687 07-01-2011 03:19 PM

A classic, to be sure

robertgss3 07-01-2011 03:31 PM

Vanishing Point Challenger is a very iconic car; however, I agree that the Autobots Movies have put the Camaro in front of otherwise non-Camaro people who may not of cosidered it prior to those movies. For car people like most on here, it did not change that we wanted the Camaro, it just made our car that much more of an icon.

Absolutely true. A C5 member even named his camaro "Elanor" I saw that and was like "wtf?"

Bonanza7 07-01-2011 05:36 PM

Yep. I have had many Mustangs and the Camaro...my first...and no Mustang got the attention that the Camaro gets...probably becaue it looks like the one in the movie.

=Stephens= 07-01-2011 05:39 PM

Fast 5 didn't make me want to get a Charger. Even if it could pull a concrete safe.

Songman 07-01-2011 05:48 PM

I just wish they hadn't killed Pontiac so we could be talking about Smokey and the Bandit and the Trans Am.... The ultimate movie car in my opinion, followed by the General Lee. I love Camaros but even Transformers doesn't show enough of the Camaro to make it a big deal to people who don't own Camaros. That's my opinion anyway.

Bonanza7 07-01-2011 06:56 PM

I was talking to a Chrysler engineer at their proving grounds, and they, the engineers, were trying to convince Chrysler to take the 68 Charger body, and start producing it with the modern upgrades. As can be expected, Chrysler refused, saying a retro car like that would not sell. No wonder they are in trouble. I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Songman 07-01-2011 07:05 PM

Absolutely! To me that is what makes the Camaro so popular. It is very close to it's roots. Of course, the Challenger is too. I've said for years that if someone built a new car with modern amenities and a 69 Camaro body that it would be a hit.

JetBlackStealth6687 07-04-2011 09:57 AM

Re: the amount of "retro" in the modern (c5) Camaro.

I think the ratio of retro to modern in the C5(50%) is much better than in the Mustang(70%). there are some aspects of the old camaro that MUST be in the C5, to be sure. The "wasp waist, for starters and other elements. There are simply more modern elements Id like to see in the next gen. A steeper raked hood, for example. Just MHO.

All I know is this.. When I got my car, almost every little kid said, "You got the transformer car!?" or "You got bumblebee!?" I have never heard a mustang being referee as a car from a specific movie.

28. 07-04-2011 12:16 PM

Hey guys you'll forgot about the TA in Knight Rider..lol Its up there as an iconic car isn't it? Every time I see one that resembles that era it reminds me of Kitt..

Stealthpanda 07-04-2011 12:18 PM

Honestly, 28., if I ever get ahold of an SS front fascia* I plan on finding a way to make it do that "KIT" red light thing. EVERY time I see the mail slot SS FF I think of KIT. Best. Childhood. EVER!
Cheers.
