Need wiring alernative for radar detector
I am looking for a way to wire my radar detector to a power source in the rear view mirror/dome light. Has anyone done this yet? I like the looks of having the radar detector next to the rear view mirror attached to the top of the windsheild but am getting tired of looking at the power cord draping down to the console outlet.

not to long ago I was looking for a new detector and I ran across onje that and an accessories set up just like you decribt some does make that set up.

I looked around and found this, the Invisicord, you have power to the rearview mirror, and if you use a mount up by the mirror, AND if you have one of the following detectors, you are set.
Escort 9500i, 8500, X50, 7500, 6800, Solo S2 Valentine V1 Beltronics STi Driver, Pro RX65, Pro RX55, Vector 995, Vector 965, Vector 955, Vector 940 (phone style connector), and Express 795 Basically any detector that uses the Escort/V1 Smartcord for power for above brands... |
Mounted mine at the top of the windshield next to the mirror. Tucked the cord along the top of the windshield and ran the cord down the A pillar and tapped into power at the auxillary outlet in the console. Works great!

Are any of you putting in a gps? I have a little garmin but can't decide where I want to put it.
I was thinking about the A pillar. but then I will have to run the chord a ways under the dash and everythign to the cig lighter. Anyone have any ideas? Near the mirror is too much. There's not enough vision as it is. |
Are you all taking off pieces of the dash to do this? I have a V1 but don't want to be taking off interior pieces that snap on or off....only ones that have screws.
Isn't there anything in terms of un-used fuses and such that can be tapped into using the fuse taps you buy at auto-zone? |

Might sound distracting, but on long road trips, I mounted my gps right onto the stereo face, there is a little flat spot on the uppoer left that will take most of the universal cups.. easy access.. More permanent solution .. dunno yet. |
I used the "Invisacord" (12") for my V1. Tapped into the power wires that run into the mirror. Works great, easy install. You just need to pull off the plastic cover that hides the wires...and plug 2 wires into the harness.
I'll double check which wires and post it later. |

There's a connector behind the mirror (remove the plastic cover). Use the end that's facing the floor. The ground is white w/ a black stripe. It's all the way on the passenger side of the connector. The + lead is RED and it's in the same row as the ground (a few wires over). It's kind of a pain to get to and see. I removed my mirror and disconnected the wiring to make it easier. The invisacord ends fit real nicely in the wire connector. Well worth the $16. For anyone else interested...here's the link... http://invisicord.com/osc2/catalog/p...e66d953507ad63 |
Cool - Thanks for the info. I have the invisicord already. that, with the blendmount and a peice of velcro adn I will have a good mount for the V1. All I need is my car...
