catch can importance?

how important is a catch can? what can happen if i dont get one? i already have 27,000 miles and no catch can yet

mikeSS 12-10-2012 11:21 PM

how long do you plan to own car?

More relevant for the direct injection V-6. Others may chime in...

Interesting ... what is the difference between the direct injection V6 and V8? Besides two cylinders ...

You will hear how it is a MUST HAVE. Then again both my CTS & 02' T/A ran 1/4 mile times just as quick as new with both having 75k + miles on them and no can.

Have never had one. Very regularly i remove and clean intake tube, MAF and TB. Never any oil in them, very clean and zero issues. 27k on my 5th gen and runs just fine on street or track.

All 3 of these vehicles i drove em hard right off the lot. No burning oil and run really strong.

I would however suggest one if your FI

The way the fuel is supplied to the cylinders. DI is a very precise shot directly into the cylinder.

Clean your intake, MAF and TB every so often. In 100k miles if you notice any let up of power or lag or whatnot. Seafoam it. Problem solved in most cases.

i'm aware of how it works with my V6. I'm curious what the V8 does differently that makes it a non issue ? :iono:

Not sure exactly what he is talking about. V8 get's oil in there as well. Most just burns off.

After 10K miles, I drained a couple of ounces from my catch can that would have ended up in my intake manifold. Unless it just grew there.

Due to the design of the direct injection engine, there's no cleansing spray of detergent-laden fuel at any point along the intake tract, as the fuel is essentially injected directly into the cylinder and does not spray the intake valve.

I'd just rather keep it out in the first place.

Oh, and I had my brand new car on the "hot break-in schedule" as well. Lots of hard pulls and coast-downs in neutral. Oil level always stays good and the tailpipes are clean.

With a lot of full throttle applications more oil (blowby) gets past the piston rings. Thats why a lot of racecars have them.
The oil then gets "burned" in the engine as it is routed through the PCV system into the intake. This prevents hydrocarbon gasses from going into the atmosphere.
EPA regulation etc.
Downside is that over time power robbing carbon deposits form on the back of the intake valves and on the piston and bottom of the valves.
The catchcan helps as it separates out most of the oil droplets before routing the vapors to the intake only.
In short, if you use the loud pedal a lot and intend to keep the car for a long time (more than 50,000mls), get one! (Just remember to drain oil from it once a month or so)
I f you drive like a Gramma and trade cars every two years, don't waste your money :)
Hope this helps.
