Ported Intake Manifold

I thought some of you would be interested to see what our stock intake manifold is like on the inside. Most of us have only seen what is revealed when swapping out the throttle body and some haven't even seen that.

Here are a few pics, one showing the gasket fit. Note the extra material around the gasket area.

Never being able to leave well enough alone, I decided that I should take over where GM had left off.

While I didn't end up with a "perfect" job, I think that I did what was needed.
The sad part is that I ran out of time to install it tonight and I have to work overtime tomorrow.

That's nasty-looking. All the extra metal blocking the flow, I mean. The V-Max folks are working on a ported intake manifold as you work...

PoorMansCamaro 09-20-2011 08:14 PM

you know this is going to get asked, so i'll go ahead and get it out of the way...

Did you dyno your car before porting, and are you going to get it dyno'd after you get it back together?

Also, with the extra air flow, you reckon you'll have to get your tune tweaked to adjust your AFR?

PoorMansCamaro 09-20-2011 08:17 PM

oh yeah, and how long do you think it took/will take you to take apart, port, and put back together?

I'm not sure where a car dyno is around here. I'm sure I could have found on but I'm in the same boat as PoorMansCamaro.
I've been using all of my mod money on mods rather than dyno runs.

I'll rely on my butt dyno and I'm also considering getting scanxl or something similar that has a dyno feature.

As for the tune, I'm hoping that it runs OK without it but that I can get it tweaked to get more out of it.

I spent 10 hours porting it and i suspect that it'll take about 1/2 hour to swap it out.
I bought a used one so I wouldn't have the down time (daily diver) AND if it turns out to be a POS I can always put the stock one back on.

I hope they don't wind up making my work look bad.
I have seen pics of their LS3 manifold and I think I'm pretty safe.

That looks AWESOME. Now we just need to hear how the BUTT dyno feels. Very interested in the results. I don't think I have the patience to do that much porting.

PoorMansCamaro 09-20-2011 08:36 PM

Now i'm no expert, maybe someone else can chime in, but are you supposed to get some really fine sandpaper and get it all smoothed out? To make sure there are no loose metal shavings?

A intake from Vmax or ported like ypur's would be a great compliment to all the other mods we do. As long as emmissions don't rise we'll be o.k.

That is brilliant!

My family owns a metal fabrication shop, and my close friend works their for us. Recently he started getting some jobs with a local auto shop and he ported out a few VW manifold as I'll post below. These had to be cut open, but still the same concept.

Where did you get the extra manifold from? I'm going to get one and have him do it for me, as I want to still have the original manifold not tampered with. I want to get the ported throttle body as well, but I wanna keep my original also... I had plans of maybe getting a new car next year, but I now have no plans of getting rid of mine and modding has started up again, shes a keeper

Looking forward to the results!
