Tuning LS3 vs L99
Hi I just wanted your opinion on how hard it will be to modify/tune the L99 vs the LS3. I know that the LS3 already has a large aftermarket following, do you think the L99 will as well, or will the AFM keep it from reaching the aftermarket status of the LS3? Has anyone worked with AFM cars before? I'd like the L99 as I prefer auto for the drag strip(although I enjoy and currently have a manual vehicle) however I'm wondering if having the L99 will defeat the purpose.:(

they are practically the same engine, once you disable AFM you should be able to use any ls series part on it.

I see.. so you would have to disable AFM then. So any chance of saving gas vs the manual would be gone. What would have to be done to recuperate the power the 22 hp that was lost vs the ls3?

turn off afm and get a tune....
|
Hmmm... after doing that then the parts will be interchangeable?

i thought i read that the cam profile was different for the l99, not as much lift thats why, the redline is different... but everything else is exactly the same

not on any car i own... on a side note, in h.s. my friend would do this to his chevette ALL THE TIME and his car ran for ever!!! well until a trunk ran a red light |
It sounds like the AFM is defeatable because I remember reading a little about the development of the Maggy' 1900 on the G8's 6.0 and they were saying, if I'm not mistaken, that they could turn it off if they needed to, although they were trying to run the car with it on to see if they could.

Check out G8board.com. There are some there who have s/c'd their AFM powered G8 GT's. There will be no shortage of aftermarket tuning parts for the L99 Camaro.

I am doing some speculating here, but I believe if you put the standard LS3 cam/lifters in the L99 you could gain back the 22hp, and most likely safely move the rpm limit up to 6600-the same as the LS3. May as well do this if you are going to tune out the AFM mode anyway. With the more aggressive gearing of the auto car this would be one nice mod. Of course, economy would suffer but oh well. The only thing I am not sure about in terms of raising the rpm limit is the VVT setup, but I don't see why that would hurt, I think the timing is most likely fixed above a certain rpm/load anyway.

Aren't the cams different between the two too?... Better watch where you're shifting that tranny also.

Now the obvious question... What does it do to the drivetrain warranty?
|
There is no reason to disable AFM to do mods or a tune. The time the AFM will be on isnt very much unless you cruise on the highway a lot and when you are wanting the power, it wont be on at all.

Yeah try to avoid doing that guys...it might end up with slight transmission damage. Plus there will be some scratches on it from being dropped out of the car:confused0068: |
