V6 Oil - hopefully the final thread

O.K., so many opinions as to what is supplied with the V6 from production. :iono:

The SS apparently has a decal identifying the oil used as Mobil 1, from production, so not really any doubt. :)

As for the V6, no such statement or decal anywhere, so no real proof Chevy puts Mobil 1 or even synthetic oil in the engine from the factory. So, what kind of oil to use when changing your oil ?

In accordance with the owners manual, Chevy wants only oil capable of meeting their standard of GM6094M, 5W-30 oil. Many here have stated they are to go to Mobil 1 synthetic for it's obvious advantages and life over mineral based oils. Mobil 1 is expensive, but it lasts much longer - as outlined by the oil life monitor in the car - which is all Chevy wants you to follow for taking care of this engine and satisfying warranty. MOBIL 1 ALSO MEETS/EXCEEDS THE CRITERIA SET FORTH BY GM UNDER STANDARD GM609M.

For mineral based oils, recommended oil changes have usually been standard every 3000 miles. Synthetics last about 1.75 - 2 times as long and maintain all lubricating / cooling properties better. SO, basically what you spend in buying Mobil 1, you nearly come out equal to the amount spent for 2 or possible more changes with mineral based. People here have also stated they have seen upward of 7000 + miles on oil life for Mobil 1 cars, so again, the money spent on Mobil 1 is worth the expenses as directly compared to mineral based. :w00t:

Synthetic has superior properties in life, lubrication, wear, cooling, etc., etc. :headbang:

So, bottom line, forgoe the expense you feel you may be losing when you buy Mobil 1 - you really are not spending more in the long run AND get all the benefits of better suited engine oil for a longer lasting engine with Mobil 1. ;)

As a past GM tech, I have pulled apart 100k mile engines that were "synthetic since birth" and 100k mile engines that were dino-based users... I believed in synthetic long before I started tearing down motors, but the proof I saw sealed the deal.

rolnslo 07-22-2009 01:31 PM

Ok, so when is a good time to make the switch from dino to synthetic?

I've got 825 miles on my car and plan to throw it on a dyno in a couple of weeks to get a baseline for future upgrades (probably around 1500 miles on the odometer). Should I change to Mobil 1 before or after the dyno run?

GaryTucker 07-22-2009 01:44 PM

I'd say at 1000 miles. Today's engines don't break in nearly as fast as the older ones. I used to say 500 miles...but the rings today aren't nearly as high-tensioned.

Make sure you do your oil change warm...not hard during the summer for sure! You want to get as much of the dino oil out as possible, but don't get crazy about having to get it all out.

rolnslo 07-22-2009 01:46 PM

Thanks. I'll try to get it done the weekend between my Zaino weekend and the Dyno weekend. :D

GM 6094M is not the the synthetic oil spec so if your owners manual says that then is came with mineral oil, not synthetic.

GM4718M is General Motors' High Performance engine oil specification. Oils which meet GM4718M tend to be made from synthetic base stocks, so it is often referred to as a "synthetic" specification.

However, not all oils, synthetic or otherwise, are capable of meeting the stringent requirements of GM4718M.

This is from my Onstar report this week.

Remaining Oil Life: 67%
Mileage: 4,344

Oil is still the oem fill Mobil 1. It will not get changed before its time...

Great pic and great info, thanks. That's exactly what is needed. Without knowing EXACTLY how mit would be identified, there would still be doubt.

Mobil 1 meets the 6094 spec and exceeds it, so safe to say it's a good diurection for the future of any V6 engine.

GaryTucker 07-22-2009 04:48 PM

Is there any other oil than Mobil 1? :D

Seriously, I'm sure there are others out there that do...just have never had a desire to find out! I've got vehicles with nearly 200k on them that have had Mobil 1 in them since day one and they haven't had an issue.

PieNsky 07-24-2009 11:55 PM

LOL!
My Toyota 4Runner with the 4 cyl in it has around 295,000 miles on it using standard oil and changes around 7,000 miles. Doesn't smoke and the only thing I've changed on it so far has been the starter.
Just change your oil when it needs it.

DCJ 07-25-2009 10:07 PM

Changed our 2LT RS at 1400 miles to Mobil 1...expensive though!

Good thread, there does indeed seem to be a lot of confusion.
I am already at 1550 miles and want to do my oil change soon.
While debating the whole break in procedure and a possible switch to Mobil 1 oil, I was doing some research too.

Can we make this thread a sticky and maybe add the following:

History
The 3600 LY7 (and derivative LP1) are members of General Motors' new High Feature (or HFV6) engine family of modern DOHC V6s.
This new family of engines was introduced in 2004 with the Cadillac CTS.
Holden sells the HFV6 under the name Alloytec.
The 2010 Camaro 3.6 liter (3564 cc) LLT is a direct injected version of the LY7.

Engine details
Engine code: LLT
Vin identifier: V
Capacity: 3.6 liter (3564 cc = 217.4886 cid = 217 cid, although the Chevy website states 220 cid… oooooh Chevy ).
Oil grade: SAE 5w-30 GM6094M Do NOT use 10w-40,20w-50 or any other viscosity grade oil not recommended.
Volume required approx.: 6-qts. (with filter)
Some one stated that the V6's come with Mobil Clean 5000 (dino oil) from the factory. (not verified)
It is widely believed that the LLT can also run 5w-30 Mobil 1 (as the Cadillac CTS is equipped as such from the factory), Mobil 1 meets the GM6094M specification.
Features: SIDI, DOHC, VVT.
Fuel Octane rating: 87
EPA est. fuel economy city: 17 mpg.
EPA est. fuel economy highway: 29 mpg.
HP ratings: 304 @ 6400 rpm.
TQ ratings: 273 @ 5200 rpm.

Transmissions
Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed automatic.
Aisin Warner AY6 six-speed manual.

Cartridge style oil filters
ACDelco#- PF459G or *PF2129 (*easier to find, AC Delco is GM original equipment, 98% single-pass filtering efficiency at 25–30 microns)
Wix#- 57090 (UPC Number: 765809570900)
Napa#- FIL 7090 (UPC Number: 765809176966, Wix & Napa seem to be the same manufacturer?)
Purolator#- L25274 (efficiency rating 97.5%, Purolator PureOne (99.9% efficiency rating) high-tech filter is not available for the V6 LLT)
Amsoil#- LF489 (# not verified, Amsoil also sells brand Wix and Donaldson)
Fram#- CH8765 (not recommended by many… I have zero experience and am only relaying info found elsewhere)
K&N# - HP-7003
STP# - S8765
Champion Lab# - P2129
Premium Guard# - PG 5274
Pennzoil# - PZ-55
Mobil 1# - NA
Bosch# - ?
Hastings# - LF 489

Pricing
These cartridge filters are generally well below $10.00, except for K&N.

Additional info
The oil pan drain plug torque requirement is 20 Nm or 15 lb ft. (not verified)
The oil filter cap torque requirement is 25 Nm or 18 lb ft. (not verified)
The same LLT engine is used in the 2009 Cadillac CTS and there the oil filler cap does come with “Mobil 1” printed on it like the Camaro V8’s also have.

So the high roller cadillac owners get mobil1 synthetic from the factory and us camaro owners get dino in the same motor! :iono:

Vash 07-26-2009 08:03 AM

The dino oil probably better for break-in anyway. Mobile one... it's cheap.

You get what you pay for.

I recommend Royal Purple 5/30 full synth after break-in.

Mobil 1 meets the specifications for the V6 (GM6094M):
