Hurst vs GM Performance short throw shifter

When I ordered my '13 SS the only option for a short throw shifter was the GM Performance. Why did they stop using Hurst, and is there really a difference?

I reckon the difference is over money and what GM was paying Hurst for the famous name.

I would just wait and get the hurst aftermarket.

2014v6 06-09-2013 11:23 AM

I guess my question is, is it really worth it?

I don't see why not.

The Hurst short-throw that was a factory option was a nice-shifter for sure...(I got one)...but come to find out, it's not like any other Hurst, no interchangeable parts, built uniquely for the Camaro...

My guess is the Chevy performance one offered now is basically the same, just not built by Hurst....

CamaroTom 06-09-2013 11:33 AM

Is the gm performance shifter the same one they put in the 1LE? If so, I say go for it! Mine feels great!

Same shifter as the ZL1 & 1LE ...

LS3 Handler 06-09-2013 11:46 AM

I have the MGW personally and love it.

That's what I've heard. It just doesn't feel as solid as you'd expect it to.

Mentioned above I had the factory Hurst...I did, however, change to the Hurst Billet Plus shifter...That is shorter throw and "solid" feel for sure, and you can play around with different Hurst parts and knobs for the "look"...

...Don't know how it actually compares to the new GM Performance shifter, though....

t&t moyer 06-09-2013 11:54 AM

I had a Hurst in my 12' SS and comparing it to the shifter in my 1LE, I prefer the current 1LE / ZL1 shifter. Maybe it's just me but I like the factory "performance" shifter. Not quite short throw but better than the standard factory offering. That being said dont get me wrong the Hurst was nice but then again there are a few other good options available too.

EastWood-SS 06-09-2013 11:56 AM

was really disapointed to find out my performance shifter was not the Hurst... guess they stopped this in 2013 with the introduction of Chevy's own shifter. They push it on you to keep the profits with them and not Hurst.

kinda sucks but the GM performnce shifter is good regardless

ff815 06-09-2013 12:00 PM

I'm certainly not complaining, I do like the feel. I was just thinking it would feel more "solid"? Btw, 1LEMayhem, your car looks amazing!

Unless you are racing, the stock shifter will work very nicely.

Blk-Ice 06-09-2013 12:45 PM

Barton makes a good one also.

The factory 6-speed shifter is shaped like an improperly circumcised gorilla's third leg. It is an abomination before God and Man that with the 'throwback to first gen' styling cues, we get a shifter I'd expect to see in a sado-masochist's 1984 Lada Samara.

I have a proper chrome stalk, white ball hurst shifter ready to go...if I can simply get the time to install it

Yes, the optional short-throw shifter is the same as used in the 1LE and ZL1, and available from Chevrolet Performance.

I agree. I don't hate the shifter in mine as much as I hate that stupid knob. I'd like to meet the person who's hand fits that knob.

sscamaro 06-10-2013 11:08 AM

I don't know about the new GM shifter, but the Hurst that chevy put was 22% shorter throw then the stock shifter. The after market Billet Hurst shifter is 44% shorter throw then the stock shifter. I have the billet Hurst shifter and love it.

That's why I bought a cueball shift knob from that guy on here before he got banned for not being a vendor. Idk if I like the way the chrome stalk looks, it was nice in my Shelby GT but it's kind of weird in the Camaro. I'm pretty sure the Hurst lets you use the stock setup though.

When you can pop it out of gear with two fingers (my index and middle).. that's a bad shifter. Can't wait to tear that thing out of there and drop a ZL1 in it.

By the way, have they done any toying with a shorter shaft on the short throw sticks like they did the WS6 short sticks of the 4th gen?

Dr. Evil 09-18-2013 04:15 AM

My 13 has a Hurst in it also. Its light years ahead of the shifter in my 11.

jackcobra 09-18-2013 07:00 AM

I was at Camaro fest in aug. talked to gm guys they discontinued hurst shifter because of to many complaints from owners

What complaints were those? I had a stock shifter replaced with a factory Hurst and I have no complaints about the factory Hurst and think it is a great improvement over the stock shifter. I hadn't heard that reason from anyone on why they discontinued the factory Hurst. I would think they discontinued it because the ZL1/1LE performance shifter has basically the same throw as the Hurst and they don't have to pay Hurst to put their name on a shifter that already has the same throw as the ZL1/1LE shifter. Plus the factory Hurst shifters were not a big seller from what I have heard (and seen). The only complaint from owners I could see would be the cost of the factory Hurst.
