The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced Feb. 26 it has selected the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro to pace the 93rd running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24, 2009.

The Camaro Pace Car was unveiled during a ceremony at the IMS Hall of Fame Museum with IMS President and Chief Operating Officer Joie Chitwood, and Indianapolis 500 winners Johnny Rutherford, Al Unser Jr. and Eddie Cheever Jr.

"The Chevrolet Camaro first paced the Indianapolis 500 in 1967 with one of the most loved Pace Cars of all times, followed by the 1969 Indy 500 Camaro Pace Car with the hugger orange paint scheme," Chitwood said. "Just 40 years after that car made its mark as a Pace Car favorite, we're pleased to have Camaro return to the streets and to the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to start our Centennial Era."

2009 marks the fifth time the Chevrolet Camaro has been selected to pace the Indianapolis 500 (1967, 1969, 1982, 1993, 2009). It will be the 44th time a General Motors vehicle has paced "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," with 20 by a Chevrolet.

Powered by the 6.2-liter LS3 all-aluminum Chevy V-8, the all-new 2010 Camaro produces 426 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. It features a Tremec six-speed manual transmission and 3.45 axle ratio.

No drivetrain or suspension modifications are required to prepare the Camaro for its Pace Car duties. The only modifications to the vehicle include a fully integrated strobe system, including a GM-designed custom light bar utilizing Whelen 500 series linear strobes.

The car carries a bold paint scheme for the Indianapolis 500, created by GM Design. More information on the production version of the all-new 2010 Camaro can be found at chevy.com/camaro.

The 2009 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car driver will be announced at a later date.

Anyone know the date and time of the race?

radz28 02-26-2009 03:26 PM

She sure is purdy :D

rmyers 02-26-2009 03:27 PM

Nice.......it was sure awesome to see it at Daytona. Did everyone catch that it was the first time since 1969 the Camaro paced Daytona!

JMAN311 02-26-2009 03:28 PM

That's cool that it's the official car. But honestly it looks like they threw this together in a 1/2 a day. The Daytona car looked a lot more planned out.

ddennis 02-26-2009 03:29 PM

What is the grill badge? it is not a SS or Z28 looks like X5??

My vote is NOT CGM:sm0::respekt::respekt:

Rallysport 02-26-2009 03:31 PM

Sweet! I wonder if we will be able to buy a limited edition copy? Hmmmmm?;)

It's SS, the sun is just shining right on it.

roadie2991 02-26-2009 03:54 PM

I wonder when they will start accepting orders for a Pace Car Camaro? I'm not going to cancel my order to wait for it, but maybe some of you that haven't ordered yet will want one. :headbang:

MarkSS 02-26-2009 04:03 PM

Great that the Camaro will pace the race, but its too bad they didn't do a white car with either blue or orange graphics to connect to the 1967 and 1969 pace cars. I am not thrilled with the graphics package on this car.

Hillbilly 02-26-2009 04:14 PM

something about those pics doesn't look real. I think its a photochop image

I agree it looks thrown together a little but I like it.

Shifty 6 02-26-2009 04:35 PM

Eddie Van Halen called he wants his car back.

How hard would it have been to paint the thing white and put some nice orange stripes down the hood and deck?

TJ91 02-26-2009 04:40 PM

It doesnt look as nice as Daytonas, the tails shouldve been red as well, are these real? lol

bballr4567 02-26-2009 04:46 PM

Whats funny is that the red is the same pattern as the black camo paint job!!

Looks far better than the Daytona pace car!

TheMadHatter99 02-26-2009 04:47 PM

I'm with the "doesn't look as nice as Daytona" crowd, but it is nice to see ever increasing publicity for it.

Same tails as the Daytona one. They match the amber light bar on the top.

I agree a white with orange stripes would be more fitting... Since the 69 is where most of the styling cues are taken from.

jesserayjames 02-26-2009 05:07 PM

Just be glad that they are using the Camaro again for the pace car.

teamlynn1 02-26-2009 05:12 PM

I actually like it better than the Daytona pace car. To each his own they say!

Silver Streak 02-26-2009 05:16 PM

Great post! Thanks.

:headbang:

Goblue 02-26-2009 05:35 PM

From what I understand, they are only making the 2 or 3 actual pace cars. There will be no festival/replica cars made or at the track.

SQUALO 02-26-2009 05:54 PM

Chalk up another popularity victory for our beloved Camaro :happyanim:

racert33 02-26-2009 05:55 PM

they wouldn't have done orange and white, they were Champ Car's colors, the IRL's far superior competition.

playhard67 02-26-2009 05:59 PM

like most, i'm not diggin' the graphics. Hopefully there's still time to change it.

2010_5thgen 02-26-2009 06:05 PM

pretty cool looking.

OUR72GTO 02-26-2009 06:09 PM

So what is the base paint?

lsuduke 02-26-2009 06:10 PM

I guess I'm in the minority here, I like this pace car better, not as busy as the daytona car. Daytona car just had too much going on, and never have been a huge fan of Sprint yellow. But, its a Camaro so I love it anyway.

Camarro SS Pace Car

1 Attachment(s)
Good afternoon Ladies and gentilemen,

I'll just get this out of the way first (I love Mustangs), however, the new Camarro is a nice piece that warrents a second look by anyone who is seriously concidering a pony car. I think GM did a great job on this vehicle.. I just hope the buying public pays attention this time. I didnt get to look at production numbers yet for 2008 Mustangs, but I did see how many Shelby GT500's were made (8134), and (1968) GT500KR's were built, I couldnt get totals for Mustang GT's and regular mustangs but they usually do about 130,000 a year and probably about 80,000 to 90,000 during these difficult times. The Dodge produced (6400) 426 bhp 425 lb/ft torque Challenger SRT-8's and will shoot for 30,000 to 40,000 v-6, 5.7 v-8's and SRT-8 for 2009, but I doubt they will make it...

I hope these cars all do well, when they do well it breeds competition and all breeds get improved and grow... I want to see Camarros, Mustangs and Challengers compete/out do each other.. OK... enough politics not the bad news bow-tie-boy :headbang:
Your not going to want to hear this but... FORD just released official pictures and stats for the revised Shelby GT500... 540bhp 510lb/ft torque 3:55 rear gears and 6speed and just as fast as the outgoing GT500KR but with better handling (for the life of me I have no idea why theres no IRS suspension)... Check (chess!!!)
