So, question about a 3rd Gen

My girlfriend is looking for a car and I'm thinking about just purchasing one and letting her drive and pay insurance on it. I have a synergy ss and I want to continue my Camaro collection. What should I do about buying this. How do I know if all it needs is a fuel pump. Should I bring someone with me to check it out? I have no idea. |
ok, i have owned several 3rd gens. 91 didnt have a 'carbed' motor, it was the throttle body injection (looked like a carb but was FI). IF it is a straight carbed non computerized swap the fuel pump is most likely on the passenger side of the block under cylinder #2. OR he could have used the in tank pump with a regulator. i dont know. ask him. If its in the tank, be prepared. it is not an easy job. you need to drop or remove the rear axel then you can drop the tank and change it.
I would at least bring a mechanic to verify the fuel pump needs. look for rust/rot near lower door hinges, rear quarters and floor boards. |
Im afraid this guy wont know s**t from how it sounded when I called him. My friends dad is a chevy mechanic and has owned a gen 2 and 4 so Ill let him read what you said and take him with me.

I had a 1988 and they didn't offer any carburated motors in that year (MFI and TPI only). I believe 1986 was the last year of carburated Camaros and that was a 305CI motor, not a 350. This tells me that the motor must have been swapped out of this car.
Be careful. Cars like this are generally just someone else's problem waiting to be unloaded on you. |
Yeah, like others have said, I'd be weary of this car. You wanna look for something almost stock, so you know exactly what's going on with it. The fuel pump is also a huge pain in the ass to get to if you do it the right way. I'd keep looking.

I would run from that car. If you want a Third gen, there are better ones out there for not much more money.

There are a lot of pretty decent 3rd gens out there for fairly cheap. Iv seen an 88 IROC in decent shape go for 3000. and you can find them for less. Just search craigslist every week, youll find one.

87 was the final year of the carbed 305's. The intake for that year was the 074 which was basically the 053 with the center bolt hole modified for the center bolt heads.
