17's VS 18's
I have only made a few passes down the track on stock tires and I am hooked...except for the traction.
I just started researching wheel and tire combos for the back and it appears I could spend a bag of money on custom made 17" wheels or I could simply purchase some 18 vette replicas for the back. As a novice will I see any noticeable gains with 17's? If I purchase 18's will I kick my self later when I want that extra tenth or two? When it comes to tire selection should I look for a tire with similar height to stock? (nearly 28") |
If your hooked as you say then you'll always want that extra tenth or two. That being said, go for the 17's. I bought mine from Rich at Bogart and their great. You can get Hoosiers from:

The big thing about 17's is that Hoosier makes a really nice drag slick for them (28x10-17). There are NO true 18" drag slicks available from any manufacturer. So, with 18's you will always be stuck running a drag radial (not a bad thing, unless you get serious about your drag racing). With 17's, you can run either....

Love my 17's... so glad I went this route instead of Z06 rims. Now I just need to find some 17's for the front.

I like the idea that 17's have the ability to have slicks. At this point I will be driving the car to and from the track so I will start with drag radials. Now I just need to figure out the differences between ZL1 and SS for backspace and clearance issues with brakes etc.

I know I've seen pictures on here of a ZL1 sporting 17" Weld RT-S Wheels. Not 100% sure if they are the same offsets as what is recommended for the SS, but I would guess so. You could try calling Weld and ask them directly???

Ted will have my 17" Bogarts and 325 drag radials on his zl tomorrow at the rental. |

Did they bolt right up or was there modifications to calipers, hoses or control arms? Are they 9.5's with 40mm offsets? Or wider? |

They are 10" wide. That I do know. |
The 17" Bogarts bolted right on at the track today. No issues. I don't even think you need to tie back the ebrake cable since its relocated on the ZL do to the wider wheels.
Hope this helps.:) |
Thank you very much. Are there any issues with not having tire pressure sensors?
What did Ted run on the front? What did you guys learn from your testing? |

Ted ran the stockers up front. He didn't see the need for the skinnies. I learned that teds zl is slow!!:sm0: 12.0-12.1 at 114-116 completely stock in 3000 da. The DR's dead hooked and he cut 1.8 60's. He just needs to tune it up. I would say unless you're going past 550 rwhp save your money and go with 18's. |
