REPAINT PREP
 

Hello guys and gals,

I have a painted engine cover that i purchased customized, but want to change the color and repaint myself. Not really looking to go all out and pay someone if i dont have too. I rather do the work myself. How should i prep it for repainting?

The color is black, and I want to repaint dark blue to match my camaro. So what would be the steps i need to take? Would i need to sand (what kind of sand paper, and for what process), primer spray? Adhesion promoter? Types of good paint to use? :noidea:

I just redone mine this week and mine had about 4 coats of primer and 4 coats of white paint, all i did was sand it down really good with some 60 grit sand paper till the old primer showed then i cleaned it up and shot some new primer on it and sanded it all down with some 320 grit then 400 grit sandpaper cleaned it all up again and shot the new color on, hope this helps!

Oh and all i used was a high heat primer, not necessary but its all i had, and then used valspar spray paint, very good spray paint for cheap. i think 3.00 dollars a can.

Thanks Moss, how will i know for each stage of sanding that i will be done? What if the person didnt prime it? When you say cleaned it all up, do you mean just wash it down real good? Then with the 320 and 400 grit, how long did you sand? Did you use a sanding machine or by hand?

if there is no previous primer then just sand it down good enough to where a new coat of primer will hold good, when sanding with the 60 grit i used a small sander, but with the 320, and 400 i did it all by hand. now when sanding the new coat of primer you dont want to get to crazy with the 320 just make the surface look good and scratched up sound odd i know, but when you go back over it with the 400 it should give it a nice buffed looking surface then cleaning i just blew it off with a air compressor then wiped it down with some cleaning stuff like windex, or if you have it you can use mineral spirits. then you should be ready to add the new paint. if the 60 grit sandpaper scuffs up the plastic then use the 320 and 400 to fix the rough spots.

oh one more thing, would it be ok to use the primer on plastic or should i do adhesion promoter? Is the primer spray can?
