Had a blow out... tire replacement doesnt match up?
 

2011 2SS Camaro

I blew out the back right tire and they replaced it with this
245/45R20

For some reason my camaro had 245/45ZR20's on all 4 tires (guessing the dealership went cheap?)
Am I nitpicking here? it seems like a big difference, did they put it on wrong? maybe the tire doesnt fit?

was that an OEM tire that GM installed? it was Z rated but new one isn't. quite cheap!

What exactly is the difference between ZR and R in the 245/45 ?

Z speed rated means it can handle higher speeds. R is common to all "R"adial tires. just how the tire is built.
Z rated tires can handle speeds over 149mph. standard tires from factory are S rated to 112 mph.

essentially, traction, rubber compound is the difference.

Either way, your SS came with 275s on the rear. Speed ratings explained here.

I was under the impression that they stopped using the 'Z' rating a while back?

"When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities."

I guess the issue here is... the used car dealership I bought this from put on 245's all around and I should be using 275/40s on the back.

That's right, the 245's are too narrow for the rear rims and that could have contributed to your blowout.

You should be going after them.

Yup, I bought a 2SS off a used dealer, it needed tires for the provincial safety, they put 245's on all around, I laughed and said hell no. 275s, or I walk from the deal.

Got a brand new set of staggered tires, Pirellis to boot ;)

Just so you know. The rear rims are wider than the fronts, and too wide for 245 tires.

It's because the 9" wide rear wheels are the max-recommended width for 245/45-20 tires, making the fitment a mild 'stretch' up from the measuring width (which is only 8").

There's nothing technically wrong with a max-recommended fitment, and it does offer some advantages (cornering and steering response/precision) to go with the disadvantages. Chief among the disadvantages is that it does not have a "conventional" appearance and it doesn't provide as much scuff protection for the wheel (for many people, in that order of importance).


Keep in mind that at 11" wide, the 5th gen 1LE rear wheels are also a max-recommended width for the tire size fitted (285/35-20's). For a reason . . .
