Comprehensive weight savings list for the V6 (LLT)
I'm creating this thread for a couple of reasons. First, I'm getting into auto cross and I've pretty much maxed out my power, so the next thing to do is reduce weight and up my suspension. Second I've seen a lot of people (with and without V6's) post about what they can do for weight savings. However there is no comprehensive list and what's worse is that the response people give is "Oh you can save about X-Y weight with this mod." A lot of people's responses are estimates and it's becoming increasingly difficult to get concrete information.
I am just now starting to look into the various weight of pieces in our car and I will update as I find them. Anyone is free to contribute to this and I will update this post. However please reference your source, other wise this is just another thread based of hear-say and speculation. So thanks to the post that BMR did with the weight of A LOT of things on their SS, it gives us a great idea. However I still need a solid source with the weight of the stock exhaust (headers, cats, mufflers, etc). Also aftermarket exhaust weight would be good to know. |

I'm thinking that RTcat600man will have some good info for you.
I'd love the know the weights of various tires so I can maybe lose a few lbs of rotating mass that way in the future. I hear the General-Tire GMax tires are good performers for a good price, but I wonder what they weigh? I believe RTcat is running those as well. |

I'd like to run 20x9s all around when/if I get a new set of rims for next summer, and hopefully the rims will weigh a tad less. Could lose a 3 - 4 lbs each of rotating mass in the fronts and possibly 6 - 8 or more lbs per side in the rear. Thats good stuff! |

I've been looking into the TSW Nurburgrings and the Forgestar F14s to replace my steel heritage wheels, but if you're doing autocross I would imagine your best bet is to do with wheels smaller than 20".
Even Pedders went with 19's on their build: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90270 Anyone have solid numbers on how much the 18" Steel Heritage Wheels on the LS weigh? 18" TSW's and Forgestars are about 18.5 lbs . . . which is crazy light. |

Definitely go smaller than 20s. It's not just the weight of the wheel but the larger diameter is harder to start and stop. Try to find 18s. And also get a shorter sidewall tire. That will get you slightly better gearing, less tire weight and get the car a little bit lower. And don't forget that a 18" tire is less expensive. Guys that are serious about autoxing will put the smallest diameter wheel that will fit over their brake rotors to save money on tires.
