Is Your Tune Unlocked Or Locked?

After seeing an interesting debate in the Atlanta Club Lounge, I figured I would pose the question. I know I just assumed my tune would be unlocked, which it is but how many people don't even know?

If you want, list your shop and opinion.

Is your cars tune unlocked or locked?
Do you think tuners should lock their tunes?

People that lock tunes have something to hide, usually a lack of understanding. I would never allow a locked tune on my car.

Good question... I'm not sure, I have remote tune from Ted jannetty. To be honest, I have full trust in Ted, so it really doesn't matter to me.

I dont believe Ted locks his tunes. Plus, its not always a thing of trust. What if you want to have the car dyno tuned locally? If the previous guy locks the tune, you're screwed.

Vengeance, and no they do not lock their tunes!

I don't lock any of my tunes for customers.

Some systems don't have the capability to "lock" the tune. HP Tuners and EFI live do.

I know some local tuners that lock their calibrations because they use tunes from other shops which surprised me. It also is done so you return to their shop for business.

I don't lock my calibrations. Never have.

My business model is its your tune and your car. Im only calibrating it to perfection. It should be a question asked up front just to be safe.

I accidentally locked the tune in my old car once when I first bought HPTuners...that said, I've never locked one since, and would never allow a locked tune in my car. What if I tune your car, lock it, and wind up moving away or going out of business or something else...why would I screw someone else over?

as a default we lock our tunes. two reasons...
1. we can stand behind our work. it's a quality thing, we have a very good reputation for providing strong reliable tunes.

2. We've had too many come-backs of Dealers applying firmware updates and erasing tunes. I don't need to say how dangerous this is on a boosted car.

3. If you want an unlocked tune it is available.

Ditto!

Software I buy for my computer is proprietary, and "locked". Tunes are software. Unless it is specifically sold to you as "open-source", it should be expected that it's locked.

I have no issue with that at all.

We do not lock any tunes for customers wondering :)

A tune is not a software. It is a calibration file. Excel is a software but excel sheet is a file.
