No production Camaro at auto shows this year
|
No major shows...no surprise...
...okay, so GM makes it official that the Camaro won't be at any major shows. Fine. Most of us suspected it anyway, so now it's official.
But, what the hell is up with the paint scheme in this picture? Suddenly I'm thrown back in time to working for the Mercury dealer. The paint job looks just like one of the standard schemes for the Mercury Villager of the time. I know it was just photoshopped, but damn, whoever did it should probably be beaten or water tortured or something. http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-new...r-ar51007.html |
hmm...nothing "new" per say - it's still First Qt. '09...but lose appeal? Something tells me that GM didn't tell TopSpeed that, instead it was an 'educated' guess on the editor's part....

I looked at the source article and it doesn't mention the release dates in the topspeed article...
"The launch dates for the production Camaro coupe are February 16th, 2009 while the Camaro convertible will hit the roads on December 7th, 2009." Hmmmmm... Looking...http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...tion-cama.html |

"Insiders debate whether the car could be adversely affected by overexposure, seeing as more people have expressed interest in the Camaro than there will be Camaros built, which will eventually be up to 100,000 annually." "One Camaro, dubbed Bumble Bee, got lots of exposure in last year's "Transformers" movie in July. When the movie went on sale in October, Chevy inserted a card in the DVD and 500,000 people contacted the company for information about the Camaro." :confused0068: You gotta be kidding!! |
hmm, maybe they should increase factory capacity a bit...

What about the Indy hints we were getting earlier? Or is that not considered a "major auto show"?
|
I don't consider Indy to be an major auto show . . . ;)
|
Indy was going to be the concept not the production? Right?

This article sites "reliable sources" for the release dates. Edit: its all over the web now. I googled "Camaro Feb 16" and all the sites are on top of it. Most seem to agree this is the begining of production and not when you can buy one. Bad news: The Camaro will be a full year behind the Challenger.... Bummer. |
I dunno...GM's been saying for a long while that production would start around October of '08 and then it would be available first quarter '09. Maybe Feb 16th is the official first day of sale?
The article says that the first production run is only for engineers and maybe that's true, but I'm not so sure. They're definitely highly inaccurate on their "spy photo" section. |
A lot of times these automotive sites will get a piece of information that have been reliable at one point, but they distort it and take it out of context. I'm sure the Camaro will begin production towards the latter part of this year and officially go on sale some time in February of 2009.
To answer gtahavit's question: It has been strongly hinted that we will see either the pre-production or the production model at the Indy bash. But nothing has been said explicitly yet. |
1. the Indy Bash isn't an auto show, its a gathering
2. the TopSpeed writeup even says that "smaller markets" will be getting a close up look at the production car 3. these sites are usually wrong... if they were right, we'd be getting an LS2 in the 5th gen... which we all know is not going to happen unless you transplant one in on your own time and dime. |
Didnt I hear somewhere that 50 production models were to be released in Nov 08? I have read that somewhere but cant remember where. I think actual sale date will be Feb 16th. Unfortunately for me I will have to wait till Dec 7. Rag top time!!!!!
