BOP th400? Swap questions

Hey guys, really sick of this m6... I love it on the street but at the strip I am getting sick of bogging or spinning and running sub par times! So I am thinking a th400 swap is coming this winter. My plans down the road are for this car to run 10s and be a summer car only in a few years anyway!

Questions... I actaully have a fesh th400 sitting in my friends garage! The problem is that its a BOP pattern, can I use an adapter and use this trans or should pick up a standard chevy pattern?

Drive shaft, who can I get a drive shaft from for a budget minded price?

Trans crossmember... seen a pic were it looks like the M6 crossmember worked with the 400, is this right?

From what I gather, I would need a flexplate, convertor, shifter, flexable dip stick, drive shaft, and the trans. Going to do full manual valve body and a 3600 stall. I am hoping this puts my car in the 11.8-.5 zone

buy a Jw SFI bellhousing and change it out. It would be a good needed upgrade anyways and you can get the ls1 pattern .... also I know a guy that might be selling a th400 to stock rear DSS driveshaft soon when he upgrades to a 9inch.

How hard is to change the bell housing out? If I had a standard Chevy pattern, will it bolt up without changing the bell housing?

Ok I see the bell housing just bolts on, no big deal. What about the flex plat, can I use a stock ls flex plate?

Unless you have another car to drive daily you might want to rethink this.

Drive around in 4th gear for a while and just imagine that the auto will actually run even higher rpm due to converter slippage.

It would save a bunch of money from having to do suspension mods or clutch with the manual and be more consistent at the track but would KILL driveability even with stock gearing.

You might even want to consider a swap to A6 gears with the auto.

The manual may be slower but it's more fun! I think a good clutch is paramount to getting consistent low 60' times.

You will have to cut the old bell housing off and it bolts to the pump. Get a tci Sfi flex plate they are cheap.

What do you cut the bell housing with? As far as drivabilty, a guy I talked to a guy that has this swap, runs 2800 at 70 mph, thats not bad at all. He said he sreet drives his car all the time and its great on the road.

My olds actually had a 2400 stall, 3.42 gears and 29" tires... it drove 70-75 no problem at about 3k. I dont need to do 90mph on th highway anyway. Eventually I did a 3400 and 4.11s, thats a no no, but I am pretty sure the 3.42s would be just fine. My buddys car has 3.55s with a 28" tire and still not bad at all on the highway.

A mill or A sawzall and finish with a milling machine. I've know people to just sawzall them depends on how nice you want it...

Ok thanks, also looking into just using an adapter plate. Would be cheaper and easier, was told standard Chevy pattern fits on the ls, and they sell Chevy to bop adapter plates! That might work, probably will have to test fit it.

The problem is its not more fun! It's actually pretty frustrating and that's why I want to do this, worring about breaking parts and not be constant enough to enter a race is getting old! I am going to drive around in 4th for a wile on the highway to get use to it again, yesterday I was doing 60 at 2300, that's nothing for this car. Pretty sure ill be ok, I drove my olds 70-75 with the same gearing from Texas to IL without breaking a sweat!

Bad70supreme 07-05-2013 11:23 AM

Well I spent some time last few days driving in 4th! Not bad at all, I also have a little taller tire on the rear, 295/40s so that might help a bit. Anyway 70-75 around 3k without a problem, normal driving around my area would be no different. Just looking into rather I can use a Chevy to bop adapter plate and not change the bell housing. I guess I wouldn't want to take a 6hr trip, but 3 years the farthest this car has gone is to Indy...About 4hrs

Not having lockup is what gets old with a street car and a th400 is you ask me. I had one In my 5th gen at one time and many in other cars.

Bad70supreme 07-07-2013 08:44 PM

I am not worried, had my share of them. Any word on that driveshaft? You know how much he would be looking to get, going to get my trans out there now and try to sell it.

JLE58 07-07-2013 08:56 PM

Not yet he is waiting on his 9 inch. My guess would be 500.
