Just had the engine redone because of my cam sliding forward. They said this is how it looked before they started and I wondered what would cause that. I forgot to ask them.

One things for sure, its happening to all the cylinders/pistons. That should rule a lot of things out.

Thats carbon build up from unburned oil vapors.

No catch can. It had 20000 miles on it. This is the second time the motor was pulled and redone.

Fresh motor now. Sounds like a catch can is in my future.
