Try not to make this a place for your advertisement, :readthethread: "IT'S REALLY ANNOYING!!"

but rather a source of information for all interested in supercharging their 2010 Camaro.

__________________________________________________ _________________________________________________

Hello All,

I'd like to put a supercharger on my car someday. Probably the Magnuson TVS2300, but please give me your opinions and choices.

So I'm doing the research for it now so when the time comes. I want to leave the car as stock as possible. Just bolt on a supercharger.

So I'm looking for a clean, safe, complete, easy install kit. A no brainer! Send links !

Also, I really don't want to blow up my tranny or rear end, and I don't want to crack my car.

Here is my plan for many reasons like money and warantee. I plan to enjoy the car the way it is new until it is paid for and the warantees expire. If I can wait that long! So I'll have anywhere between 30k miles to 60K miles on my car when I get my supercharger. They might even have better stuff by then, but that's not important for this thread.

My next step from now until then will be to strenghten the car. I don't think I can void any warantees that way. If I can let me know. Also I have a link chassis strenghening thread I started below. Please visit that and give me your input and pictures if you have them.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77858

After Bumblebee is paid for, and there are no more warantees, on goes the supercharger to a 100% bone stock factory car. I want the car to last for the long haul.

The only other mods I would even consider for my car are a CAI, an Xpipe, and shorty headers.

But this thread is about bolting on a supercharger to a 100% bone stock factory car so lets not get too distracted with other stuff. However, why is it after adding headers to an already supercharged car that you have lower a boost level?

I have a bunch of questions !! !! !!

Please take the time to read my question and answer the ones you know the answers to even if someone else did. The more knowledge the better !!

Links & Pictures are great too! Thank you :) !!

Don't be shy!! Even if someone already answered the same thing. Your opinion is valued ! I like to hear multiple opinions of the same thing to reinforce the idea or of different ideas to get people thinking.

But don't get into a opinion war just answer my post or send me a PM if someone is misinformed so we don't get off topic, but I'd like as much info on the thread as possible for reference purposes for myself and for others who want to know the same things. I've actually gone back here to my original post to tweak it a bit as you guys post responses.

First does the AFM on the L99 have to be turned off? what happeneds when boost for 8 cylinders gets pushed into 4 cylinders when the AFM is on? or are those valves open and just no fuel is being pumped in? If that's the case wouldn't a supercharger dry the cylinder walls?

If the AFM needs to be turned off, do the AFM lifters need to be swaped out?

I like the superchargers that go on the top of the motor mostly for the look like the Magnuson TVS2300. Is that Maggie for short ? (you never know!!)

From what I understand the ones that bolt on like alternators like procharger and vortec claim to get more power because they can run intercoolers or because the run coolerGive me the pros and cons of both types of systems.

Does GM honor the factory warantees with the the Edelbrock E-Force Supercharger Street Legal Kit For Camaro ?
(meaning this one does not void the GM 5y/100,000m warantee)

Which supercharger is the easiest to maintain? and lasts the longest?
So I don't have to mess with it? Set it and forget it !

Which one can use the factory airbox? Does anything have to be moved?

What is a SAFE bolt on option that won't blow up anything on my car?

What is a SAFE level of boost for the motor, tranny, and rear end?

Will the supercharger be safe to put on a car with 30K to 60K miles on it?

Which kits require no modifications or the least modifications?

Will I have to make spark plug temp and thermostat changes?

Will the stock fuel system need to be modified for my goals?

Which will I be able to get parts for the easiest? and for years?

Do I need to drill the crank ? and how? is it easy if needed?

Can the torque converter, tranny and rear end handle it?

Can I keep the traction control system ??

Can I keep the stock GM tune??

Are they all liquid cooled ??

Which kits are you all using ?

What are the HP & torque ratings with 6 psi of boost?

What will it run at the track with 6 psi of boost?

Is the thing noisy ? I'd like a quiet one.

What kind of fuel milage will I get?

Who have you purchased from? or would you purchase from?

How much did your supercharger cost you start to finish??

Any regrets ???? Final tips or Suggestions ?

I think my first step will be to reinforce the car first.
None of the reinforcements should void my warantee, I think.
And they probably need to be done anyway.

What should I do you reinforce the car first??? See my other thread-

The MagnaCharger TVS-2300 is the same design used on many Factory SuperCharged built cars. This design seems to be more reliable and long lasting then others, just my oppion. The TVS-2300 delivers power very quick and is the reason many would recommend it on a automatic car.The Procharger style system might give you more power, but it will be higher in the rpm range verses a Maggie.I have been told by someone that has driven a procharged car with 650rwhp verses my car with 537rwhp that my car felt like it had the same or more power. This is a serious drag racer that drove these cars. They are both great units ,but just deliver power alittle different. When you do a SuperCharger install you will tune out the AFM.The TVS-2300 comes with a tune, but I had mine dyno tuned.Whoever does the install can do the tune for you.The TVS-2300 is a bolt on unit with little to no modification. You should be around 8lbs of boost with the stock pulley that comes with the TVS-2300.Stock fuel system will be fine.If you did a TVS-2300 and a Exhaust you should see around 475rwhp.The Transmission and rear end will do fine with that kind of power.I am at 537rwhp on all stock parts and everything is doing just fine.I want to get up around 600rwhp and will beef up the Transmission for that. You can use traction control. You should have no problems getting parts down the road.I was shocked how quiet the TVS-2300 IS.I can't even hear mine at all.I did a Cam install on mine and it knocked my boost back from 8.5 to 5.5.When it was at 8.5lbs I could hear it whine alittle, but not bad.I miss being able to hear it.I had a local High Performance shop do my install and they charged me $7600.00 for everything out the door.I haven't run my car at the track, but have been told by my tuner that it should run low 11's in 1/4. I hope I have helped you some.I will tell you there are alot of guys on here that are experts at this and I just gave you my oppion with what little I have learned over the last year or so.

Z_Rocks 04-17-2010 03:25 PM

My suggestion is to wait until your level of apprehension comes down and you become more in tune with the idea of the "higher" possibility to break things when you go F/I. Otherwise, you will not enjoy the added power, because you'll be nervous all the time pushing the car. Drive the car for a while, and once you "accept" the fact that shit will happen and I'll deal with it when it does, then find a good shop near by and let them guide you through it.
My sincere suggestion is just go enjoy the car the way GM has designed it, and then start modifying it.

Just my two cents!

general consensus is a maggie or other SC running 6-8 lbs is pretty safe. You can do that and not change anything else in the engine or fuel system and you will have a nice car that is safe. As for AFM you can keep it or turn it off but I don't see why anyone would want to keep it that is also getting a supercharger. Since you have the auto you can get a tranny tune and that can change how the car reacts quite a bit as far as how fast the shifts are. This is up to you how aggressive you want to go with it, the more aggressive the shifts then more likely it would be to have something go wrong. I haven't heard of people having problems with 500-550 HP and the stock tranny. I have about 3K miles on my supercharger/CAI/headers and tune combo without any issues and I drive it pretty hard.

Mark-HD 04-17-2010 05:22 PM

I choose the maggie because of the OEM cars I have driven with a roots style SC. I can't speak to the automatic because I have a manual but if you install a stock Magnuson kit with the 3.8 inch pulley your boost will be tame. Using the stock tune and no headers will give you a very reliable everyday driver that will last you. You can even buy a 36k/36 month drive train warranty if you want. The low end torque is there on command. You will not believe the power. You guys out there with the automatics talk to him about the AFM....Good luck. I have 8000 miles on mine and no regrets and no issues....

I posted my comments in-line...

I'd like to put a supercharger on my car someday. So I'm doing the research for it now. I want to leave the car as stock as possible. So I'm looking for a clean, safe, easy install kit. Also, I really don't want to blow up my tranny or rear end, and I don't want to crack my car.

Are you planning on installing yourself or using a qualified shop in the area?
There are a few good Tuners in the Area.
Janetty and Slowhawk come to mind. There are others, as well.

I have a bunch of questions. Please take the time to read my question and answer the ones you know the answer to.

The Tuners all recommend turning AFM off with a S/C'd setup. I know Janetty had 2 vehicles that collapsed lifters with the L99. It makes sence.. you don't want boost to come in with only 4 cylanders active.

I like the superchargers that go on the top of the motor mostly for the look. From what I understand the ones that bolt on like alternators claim to get more power because they can run intercoolers or beecause the run cooler. Give me the pros and cons of both types of systems

Which is the easiest to maintian? and lasts the longest? So I don't have to mess with it?
Set it and forget it !

You should be looking at the Magnuson TVS2300 or Kenne Bell. Both are good for 100K miles with literally zero maintenance.

What is a SAFE bolt on option that won't blow up anything on my car?
You want a CAI to go with the S/C, and probably a cat back exhaust. I would not do headers and High flow cats.. those throw codes that need to be tuned out. You DO want to get a TUNE (by either Janetty or Slowhawk).

What is a SAFE level of boost for the motor, tranny, and rear end?
You want to stay around 6 lbs. boost.

Which kits require no modifications or the least modifications?
Magnuson or Kenne Bell. You still need to Tune in the ECM.
If Janetty or Slowhawk install it, you can get a warranty.

Will the stock fuel system need to be modified for my goals?
Magnuson comes with the upgraded injectors. I would bet the KB does as well. Lingenfelter adds a Boost a pump to the fuel pump, I don't think it's mandatory.

Which will i be able to get part for the easiest? and for years?
Either. Parts are available for both types I listed.

Can the tranny and the rear end handle it?
It depends on how abusive you are to it. If you drive with your foot to the floor 90% of the time, you will eventually break something. If you use the boost occasionally, it will last a LONG time.

Can I keep the traction control system ??
YES.

Which kits are you all using ?
MAgnuson TVS 2300 - the KB was released about 6 weeks ago. I would buy the KB now as it makes more power and is bigger.

What are your HP ratings?
526 HP 491 torque (with CAI, no headers, Borla Cat back exhaust, Tuned by Lingenfelter.)

What do you run at the track?
I havn't gone yet.

Is the thing noisy ? I'd like a quiet one.
Can barely hear it. Makes a little noise at WOT.

Who have you purchased from? or would you purchase from?
talk to Janetty or Slowhawk. they can set you up.

How much did your supercharger cost you start to finish??
I spent over 15K with Lingenfelter - had a bunch of extra work done. I wanted the best. Price was no object.

What should I do you reinforce the car first??? See my other thread-
Chassis stiffeners and strut braces.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77858
You will want a good solid suspension.

Any regrets ????
None whatsoever.

If that's the case wouldn't a supercharger dry the cylinder walls? NO, but I would personally

If the AFM needs to be turned off, do the AFM lifters need to be swaped out? NO, turning it off simply stops the signals being sent to the lifters to "lock" in the open position

I like the superchargers that go on the top of the motor mostly for the look. From what I understand the ones that bolt on like alternators claim to get more power because they can run intercoolers or beecause the run cooler. Give me the pros and cons of both types of systems Most of the "hang-off" types are centrifugal and "usually" make their power higher up in the RPM range. I like the Maggie cuz it comes on down low and performs its best in the low/mid range.

Which is the easiest to maintian? and lasts the longest? So I don't have to mess with it?
Set it and forget it ! The Maggie has self contained lubricant and is good for 100,000mi according tot heir website. Most centrifugals recommmend fluid changes at 6000mi and up

What is a SAFE bolt on option that won't blow up anything on my car? Use the "canned" tuned that comes with the Maggie (6psi) and is warranted for 3/36 with longer possible for purcahse (as long as you left the car 100% stock!)

What is a SAFE level of boost for the motor, tranny, and rear end? See previous question/answer

Which kits require no modifications or the least modifications? IMHO, the Maggie

Will the stock fuel system need to be modified for my goals? Not on the supplied tune

Which will i be able to get part for the easiest? and for years? Mggie's have been around the longest and have the greatest numbers out there right now

Can the tranny and the rear end handle it? With the canned tune, no worries

Can I keep the traction control system ?? YUP

a couple of suggestions. Either buy the Heater hose re-route kit from ADM or reroute the hoses yourself. it will be a much cleaner install. Eventually I think you might want MORE power so buy the smaller pulley and CAI, get a tune from JANNETTY racing IMO.
This is just my opinion i have seen the writeups of the Kenne Bell and the magnuson. From what I have seen the kenne bell produces more horsepower and better numbers STOCK straight out of the box compared to the maggie. the Kenne bell costs 1000 dollars more then the maggie. If I spent 1000 more on my car I could purchase a CAI, smaller pulley, better tune and equal or not better kenne bells numbers. The kenne bell is a more difficult install( i wanted to install the supercharger ourselves). The kenne bell is a new product (phenomenal) numbers but the maggie is long lasting and is PROVEN.
If your'e going to race your car alot buy a kenne bell. If you want the occasional (whup the car next to you) and go to the track on occasion with everyday driveability(and reliability) purchase the maggie. This is my opinion only. I have driven my car for 4.5 hour trips and have put a few thousand miles on the car with no worries whatsoever. This is an everyday driver and used for charities

Yup and both (one and the same) are intercooled. As far as trouble free add ons the Maggie is a shoe in.
Check out the official times in the 1/4 mi tread most are running maggies, and of them most are driven regularly without problems.
I say find a good shop in your area and let them do the tune to keep it safe but maximize the build.
Then Have Fun!

My answers are in Bold and Italics below each question... I answered the question which had the most relevance...

First does the AFM on the L99 have to be turned off?
No, it's not required to be turned off, but the noise will be very annoying if you don't.

What is a SAFE level of boost for the motor, tranny, and rear end?
6 - 8 PSI.

Will the supercharger be safe for a car with 30K to 60K miles on it?
Yes.

Will the stock fuel system need to be modified for my goals?
