SS LS3 Fuel Economy

Hey guys, I just returned from a 600 mile road trip and was trying to see how my mileage compared to others here. I averaged 21mpg over the whole trip with that being about 90-95% highway miles with my speed between 75-85mph. I feel this is a little low:iono:. On the highway I drive in 6th gear, should I be in 5th to get better fuel mileage or is this just what I should expect at those speeds.

its the speeds. well it was in my goat, similiar drivetrain so Im sure its compareable. 55-65 my highly accurate computer would tell me my instant economy was between 27-25mpg somtimes higher depending on driving conditions. I did it by hand after trips and it was never more than a mpg off. On a longer trip on highways with a 70mph speed limit, running the same speeds you mentioned I would average from 20-22mpg. I'd say your in the right ballpark, depends a bit on weather terrain, just driving conditions, up hill downhill.

That seems about right. With my L99 when I'm on the freeway with AFM turned OFF ill get about 25-27mpg at 70 mph. At 75-80mph it drops to around 21-23 mpg.

21 MPG sounds right with a 80 MPH average. As speeds go up, the engine works harder due to aerodynamics. The optimal speed for maximum mileage is about 60 MPH. Of course, you will get ran over going that speed on most highways.

MPG depends on your lead footitis!!

Buy a honda if everyone is so concerned about gas mileage..

Get over 2000 rpm and the economy is out the window. I avg about 21.5 on long trips, way better than the 14.5 around town.

If it bugs you so much, buy me a honda and I won't be concerned about it. I am not too worried about it since the camaro is the most economical vehicle I own, but I was just curious and trying to get the most out of it.

Thanks for every one else's replies, it's good to know it's on track, I was just confused by the stock hwy mpg ratings, I didn't realize they considered 60mph highway speeds.

red70tvhs 07-10-2012 03:10 AM

around here 60mph is 5 over highway speeds. Most local interstates (local as in I got to drive a freakin hour minimum to get to the closest one.... yeah im in the boonies :D) around here was 65mph until the past year or so they bumped it to 70mph.

When I'm on the highway I get around 29-31MPG and I have an LS3, and I put it into 6th gear

Pretty simple: The more conservative you drive, the better MPG you will receive. Ride around town in 1st gear at 3/4 throttle for a while and check out your MPG. The harder you make the engine work, the worse your MPG will become. All MPG ratings on every car/truck are considered with conservative driving.

That is a little low to be honest. I just came back from a 320mi round trip and the camaro averaged ~25mpg at about 75mph.

clg_98ta 07-10-2012 07:39 AM

FWIW, I only average around 14 in my normal city driving in my 2010 LS3, but I have averaged a little over 25 on short trips averaging 70mph.

When I had my camaro, I can tell you, while strickly on the highway, i would average between 25-27MPG @ 75-80MPH...This was really easy. I had like 4 long trips over 300 miles one way and all of them I was over 25MPG on the highway. However, in the city, forget it, my average MPG was between 14-16. Like said above, it's all about when you shift. If you have a heavy foot, say good bye to your fuel mileage.
