LS9 cam?
Anyone use the LS9 cam in an LS3 with a blower? I just bought one at work for $100 and ordered the SLP TVS2300 from Jannetty along with there header and cold air intake 415 Brawler package. Great guys to deal with by the way! I chose that cam because it is inexpensive and very easy on valvetrain. I'm installing it myself, which only takes a couple hours, my time is free so no lose there. Ted is guessing 25 hp which is good for $150, with gaskets and such, and the LS3 will like it a little better than the NA cam it comes with. Any opnions? Thanks!

Does the ls9 cam require a spring change? And are there any aftermarket blower cams that dont require spring changes?

You can use LS3 springs with that cam. I have no clue what springs are on the 99 motor. I would use them on naturally aspirated motor, but not with f/i. Spend a little money and at least get some B'hive springs. To get a cam swap done in two hours must have parts and wrenches flying:w00t:

I agree, the LS9 cam is a nice upgrade for the money! The stock LS3 springs will work, but since you are in there it is a nice upgrade to change them out.
Ted is right on with the numbers! |
Thanks for the input. Cams are easy in these cars, kinda like the gto i owned before this. The c5 vette i had is another story, almost easier dropping the entire drivetrain, which only takes a couple hours to have the body lifted off. I'll think on the springs, can also be done a little later.

The LS3 and LS9 valve springs are exactly the same if I remember correctly.
With the LS9 Cam,which I have been considering also,I would stick with the Factory beehive springs. The LS9 is Supercharged,as we all know,so should work excellent with a Maggie, etc. Much,Much less valve train wear and won't have to go back in to change them out in a few years as you would with Double springs which are required with most aftermarket Cams. |
I'm currently running a Whipple and the LS9 cam on the stock LS3 springs. Biggest reasons I went with the LS9 were: Price, idle quality, drivability at low speed, setup from the factory to use the same spring for 100K miles. Sure, it doesn't make the most power, but it makes enough with my meager combination. Good luck with your build!

We did a LS9 cam in a 2010 with a whipple a few years ago. Car had a rotofab intake and headers also. With the stock blower pulley it had no problem making 630 at the tire!
There are better options than a LS9 cam but you can't beat the price and it would be easy on the valve train. |
Not much to add to what has been said before but I put the LS-9 cam with the Edelbrock E-force supercharger and do not regret it at all. Cheapest, easiest and least compromising 25 HP you will ever get.

Installed the cam tonight. Ted Jannetty whipped up a tune for me at short notice, use that until I put the charger on wednesday. Took longer than I originally said,a shade over 3 hours, and that included pinning the crank while I was there, and a little BSing of course. Car runs great thanks to Ted. Glad to hear everyone likes the cam and charger combo, makes me look forward to the end result.

the LS9 cam is a good cam not bad for an $80 cam. Had it on a turbo 6.2L build I had made 627rwhp @ 10lbs
