Window Tint Law in Illinois

Hello,

I purchased a camaro December 2012 in Texas with tinting front (35%), back (35%), and rear (20%). It's OK in Texas, but I am an ILLINOIS resident.

My concern is the rear window tint, which is illegal in Illinois (must be >=35%).

I recently found the different "tinting law" per state. I contacted the dealership and they are going to reimburse me for stripping and re-tinting any window tint above 35%.

I want your thoughtful suggestion. I have seen many "illegal" tinting in street. Do I have to change it? Or do you think cops are generous on this matter?

Thanks for your advice in advance.

I live in Illinois and have been running 20% all around for 2 years with my Camaro and 3 years before that with my cts-v. Never had a single issue. I don't live in, or near Crook County though. I would say unless you are a cop magnet you should be safe with that tint.

Tint is illegal in the city of Chicago. Rest of Cook County and the state is 35%. I've been pulled over in Rockford by a state trooper and warned. I have 35% on sides and back.

The tint law isn't enforced that much. I know many people that should have been ticketed for their windows but the cops never said a word.

I live in Cook County. I have 20 % all around, travel from northwest to southwest 5 days a week for work. Haven't received any hassle on the tints (knock on wood). No front plate on the other hand they don't like very much.

As long as you stay out of Chicago you'll be fine.

I have yet to be pulled over in my Camaro but 2 years ago when I had my 08 Malibu the first thing i did was get it 20% all around.
Got harassed by cops in ever state from Indiana to North Dakota.
The last straw was when I was driving around my neighborhood on 26th Street.
Narc car rammed the back of my Malibu him and his partner got out, ran up to my window and batoned the front windows and dragged me out. They got smart with me and said they couldn't see what I was doing.
That's the "Hood" and Crook county for you....

i got 35% all around just so i dont have to deal with all the BS. Ive been pulled over 2 times in my camaro in 3 years. One was because i was speeding and i only got the speeding ticket. the second one was bc i had a tinted license plate cover and i just got off with a warning on that one. Neither one said anything about not having a front plate or having tinted windows. you still get BS in chicago though. to the post above me Crook county is right. I got 3 tickets in 3 days for not having a front plate. 2 of them were in the same spot and i didnt even move my car i just took my ticket off and the next day there was another one on there. lol still no front plate on my car. take that city of chicago.

Yep Crook County needs money, they will ticket anything that moves if they can catch you, LOL and what is this front license plate you speak of ?

Lol doesnt this apply to more than just tinting?

I've been hasseled about my window tint in Niles, and I'm 35%. They didn't write me a ticket for it, but said that my tint was darker than 35%. They did write me a ticket for no front plate though.

I'll be moving to Champaign/Urbana in a few months. guessing I'm going to have to get the car inspected to register it. Got 20% tint. will I have to remove it just to end up getting it retinted?
