Transmissions...?

Hey gang,
I'm a "many times per day" lurker/rare poster.
I could have missed it but I wanted to discuss transmission options. One of the discussions mentioned that a GM exec stated that there would be a mild V6 as well as a higher HP V6 with a 6 speed stick or automatic available. THAT post gave me more goose bumps. Up until I bought my '91 Chevy dually extra-cab 4X4, everything I owned was, and HAD TO BE a stick. It's always nice to launch with a clutch but freeway driving in So Cal has converted me to an Automatic kind of guy. Also I see clutches as "wear items" that need eventual replacement but a well maintained, strong Auto trans could last the life of the car.
Here's the deal, if Chevy offers a strong (Allison?) 6 speed automatic behind the 450ish HP V8, with the steering wheel mounted paddle shift option (like the Corvette for example) I am absolutely ALL OVER IT! Of course it will have to have the auto stick selector in the console as well but man, if it will shift through 6 gears for you, why would you want to ALWAYS do it manually?
I'm almost 50, I'm old, but that my take on it.
Wondering what others think about it.
Thanx,
Ken

I'm thinking a 6 spd. manual, with an option for paddle shift at some point, similar to the Corvette (the paddle shift option came a year after the C6's introduction if I'm not mistaken?)

For an auto., first thought would be a 5 spd., but who knows, maybe a 6 spd. auto?

Personally, I'd want a Camaro with a manual only. The paddle shift would be neat, but call me "old fashioned", I like it just the way my current Camaro is...shirtfer in the center console.

2 speed powerglide should be the only tranny available.

paddle shift would be cool...it gives it a modern feel...plus i have used it on my friend's Audi and i had fun...but either that or a 6 speed would be nice...

The Corvette's "paddle" shifted trans is for the 6spd auto only, not a manual.
Corvette has either a 6spd auto or manual option. Auto is a 1500 option I belive. There is no more 4spd auto for the Corvette, 6spd manual is standard.

We might see 6spds auto and manual all across the board, but its possible like the VE cars in Australia, there might be a 5spd auto option for the 6cyls.

I want a colum shifted Camaro like my 72!!! Ahahaha, kidding. Ill take the new 6spd auto with paddles. What can I say, Im lazy.

I love the idea of an auto 6 spd. Personally, I think I would have to stick w/ the center console Hurst short throw manual 6 spd. I don't know how much I'd like paddle shifters.....I'd have to do a test drive to see how I like it. BUT, I know what you mean about having to shift constantly in the heavy traffic. It can get annoying sometimes....Austin....stop and go, stop and go, stop and go....

I also hear ya on the wear and tear issue by going w/ a clutch. Luckily, I've yet to burn out a clutch. Hope it doesn't happen anytime soon!

Try living in NJ...its a constant stop and go....except the Parkway aka the JerseyBahn.

this has actually been discussed before and it was brought up that by the time this car comes to market, the price of entry is going to be a six speed manual and a six speed auto w/paddle shift option... GM already has the 6L80E in the C6 and has pretty much perfected the six speed gearboxes that are used in various platforms around the globe.

as mentioned above, there will be probably be a five speed auto V6, a 5spd manual V6, a six speed manual high option V6, a 6spd auto V8 and a 6spd manual V8... not only does that make sense, it keeps the car (and the platform that it is on) in or ahead of the performance curve.

Unfortunatly for your theory, GM does not have a 5-speed transmission. They could source one from Aisin, like they do for the Equinox, but that too is Front wheel drive.

Soooooo.......it's going to be all 6-speeds across the board.

Casull 02-01-2007 11:26 AM

I am looking forward to getting a 6-speed. This will be my first manual transmission vehicle. I have always wanted one, but the wife has always refused to let me get one :iono: . I have always been left to bumming my firends' rides and getting my gear-shifting fun that way. Also, by getting a manual, it pretty much guarantees my wife will not be driving my car!
