Video: Talking Z/28 with Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser!

Quote:

Special guest Al Oppenheiser, Chief Engineer at General Motors, sits down with Jessi Lang, Carlos Lago, Elana Scherr and Scott Evans to talk about the new Camaro Z/28.

While the street/track ZL1 utilizes a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 to provide its 580 hp and 556 lb-ft of torque, the Z/28 utilizes the outgoing Corvette Z06's 7.0-liter naturally aspirated LS7 V-8. Final power figures have not been announced, but Chevrolet promises at least 500 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The LS7 was selected over the supercharged LSA for its broad torque curve and high 7000-rpm redline, which makes it well-suited for high-speed track driving. Both the engine and Tremec TR606 six-speed manual transmission, the only available, have dedicated high-capacity cooling systems.

Nice find brt3, thanks for posting!

Not much new, basically a marketing amuse-bouche, but interesting nonetheless. Said he wanted to be in the conversations of Porsche GT3 owners, that sure as hell happened ;)

He did allude to trying to get a "race" series together which I found a bit of a shock. Got to marinade and prepare some crow on that point because I am on the record here as specifically saying this would not be a "race" car. It is not a done deal so no need to cook and eat it just yet.

My overall thought is he played it close to the vest and stuck with all the talking points of the past. No harm in that and you can't produce any surprises if you spill the beans early eh?

I would expect a couple more of these over the next five months to keep the juices flowing before the real info comes out in Dec/Jan/Feb.

The 6 cylinder all the way up to the ZL1! So I guess Al thinks the ZL1 is the top dog.

I read that thread... as it stands, many of the Z/28 components are illegal for club racing.. unless rules and regulations in the next couple years would allow the Z/28 to compete... just what are you really paying $70K for

This is the first "american" car that I ever heard of that your buying the name

inb4 doc says "I told you so!" :first: LOL

mkorgan 07-18-2013 05:49 PM

"angry, pissed off, knife through butter, bad ass, still #1". Al called it a "race car" at least 3 times. Cart blanche, no compromise...I need to step away from my computer for a second...be right back...

Great video. Really loved the eye candy shots and I couldn't help but yell when they asked if they could look at the Z/28 and then the video ended! There will never be another car that will surpass the excitement that I feel for this Z/28. It will probably always just be a dream car for me but it makes me extremely proud to be a Camaro fan and we really haven't seen what it can do yet. Even without knowing the pricing I don't see how any true Chevy performance enthusiast that has the means could pick any other car. The creature comforts that are sacrificed wouldn't bother me one bit, specially with that glorious sound of an LS7 blaring through those pipes. I can't wait till the guys on here start lining up to get one. We are in great times!
