Pinging on 87
Anyone else? Happens on all brands on moderate acceleration and using 93 it runs great.

Turn up the radio it wont bother you. Seriously I have put 91 (super here in Kalifornia) since new, its about $3.90 more a tank, I didnt buy this beautiful car to chinze it with cheap gas. Hell I even put 91 in my Toyota Yaris but I really drove the shit outta that car it earned it.

I used to run 87 without any issues, but she seemed kind of sluggish. So I started running Mid-grade 89 and she really likes that, so that's what I run.
No pinging ever!! |
i tried 87 in mine once, it ran rough on the top end. i been putting shell 93 in ever since and it runs very smooth.

I am not sure you should hear pinging, if the ECU is doing its job and monitoring the Knock Sensors it should be adjusting your timing. You will feel a loss of power but you should not be able to hear pinging.

The LLT & LFX have 11.3-1 CR so you will get more power, better fuel economy out of it running 93. The ecu will retard timing when running 87 (the 87 is only for marketing as yes, the engine can and will run fine on 87, but 91-93 it will shine).
Even though you are fine running 87, I would not think of it as the spark pulled can be 4-6 degrees and that is alot of power & economy left on the table. Now, a 8.5-1 cr motor anything above 87 IS a waste of money. :thumbsup: |
Have any data to support the above? I would be interested to see it. It does make sense to say the engine may be pulling off advance, but how can that be demonstrated?

I would be curious too about that, however putting premium in your Camaro is one of those feel good things suckers like me buy into...so I'll continue to do it as its fairly cheap

I understand it's not much more to have to use 91 octane. I'd just like to see a link to some evidence that it'll take advantage of it and not just add more unburned residue in my cats and the rest of my exhaust.
The marketing thing telling people to use 87 octane makes sense. It would make sense to also not include a note, buried in the owner's manual, that higher performance could be expected from the use of 91 in the LFX. That might put some people off. I have (totally unrelated example) a '95 Mitsubishi Montero SR that says "Premium Fuel Recommended" on the inside of the gas door. The manual says regular can be used, but a slight loss of performance will be noticed (pulls timing via 2 knock sensors). I use premium in that one, every time. John B. |
