JRE 415 Package Install **Pics/Video**
 

I recently installed the JRE 415RWHP package on my Camaro, and wanted to share my impressions. My choices consisted of:

• Stainless Power 1-7/8" LT headers w/ off-road connections
• Cold Air Inductions intake
• JRE scoop
• SCTx3 w/ JRE tune

I already had the Flowmaster cat-back AT system installed shortly after I purchased the car a year ago. These items are the total mods to date.

The installation went well. I should note that I agonized over which headers I wanted to purchase. I wanted to stretch my mod dollars without compromising quality. The final push for me was the JRE free tune program. It made sense to take advantage of Ted's program, so I bought my parts from him.

Notes from my experience:

1. I did not use the silicone that was provided with the headers. I have never used silicone on any previous header installs that I've done, and I really didn't want to mess with it. I re-used the factory steel gaskets, and they sealed up nicely.
2. The instructions called for removing the pinch bolt for the steering shaft, and sliding it up and out of the way. I did not do this, and the headers slipped right in. Your mileage may vary.
3. There was plenty of clearance around the headers after install. I did note that the steering shaft rubber and plastic pieces are damn close (see pic). After 100 miles, nothing has melted. :thumbsup: 2" headers would be a dicey fit there, IMHO.
4. I do not care for the "factory connect" exhaust clamps, and did not use them. Instead, I had a local exhaust shop re-size one end of my mid-pipes to slip over the 2.5" exhaust system connection, and used an additional band clamp for those connections.
5. I had planned on capping the rear O2 sensor holes since those sensors won't be utilized. I changed my mind and installed them anyway, because I did not want to leave the rear O2 connectors uncovered. Since there is a 5v circuit there for the O2 heaters, they would corrode over time if left exposed.
6. I did not need to modify the dipstick tube to clear the flange.
7. If you opt to do the Roto-Fab washer relocation and use the CAI intake, do the intake first. I could not get the CAI lit to fit properly until I removed the Roto-Fab washer tank, then reinstalled it afterwards.
8. The scoop somewhat interferes with the washer pump relocation. They will work as described, but the pump kind of sits in the middle of the scoop. Odd.

The results were better than I hoped for (see video). I now have the sound that I was after, excellent power increases, and no CEL. The drone is pretty pronounced under load, but the car sounds pissed so I will live with the drone.

Ted tuned out the skip-shift for me, as well. Don't miss that one bit! :biggrin:

I highly recommend this setup. Next spring I'll install a cam, as my goal is a conservative 500RWHP N/A. Enjoy!

Thanks! I was never able to find a good video that showcased this specific exhaust setup. I was on the fence about high-flow cats vs. no cats, strictly in the interest of sound.

There are no inspections in my state, so my only consideration was tone. Maybe high-flows don't affect the sound much at all, but I couldn't find any definitive information on the subject. So, I went without, saving a few bucks and getting exactly what I was after for the exhaust note.

How would you describe the smell of having no cats? Some say it is rotten eggs, while others describe it as sweet.

It isn't a rotten egg smell. Think of the heavy smell you get when you start your lawn mower in the garage. It's exactly like that.

It'll make your eyes water if you stand behind the car long enough. It's not noticeable in the car unless you're stopped at a light and the windows are down.

It just smells like it's original 1st-gen roots! :thumbsup:

Sounds good.. I have the same mods and tune with the exception of the race scoop and relocation bottle which I have and just haven't done that in this car yet (had them in my last), in no rush to put them in.. I feel the benefit versus annoying install isn't worth it, right now anyways!

I've always been a fan of flowmaster just not the drone that comes along with it... thus why I went with my solo cat back with j pipes...
Couldn't be any happier with the sound and I have absolutely no drone and it sounds mean as hell..
