Is it 89 IROC-Z or RS?

I am about to buy my first Camaro. The owner says its a RS but when I ran different VIN decoders, two out of three said it was IROC. The VIN is 1G1FP21E3KLXXXXXX but I understand a RS could have been ordered with a
V8. Help.........

Thanks

I believe that is a 305 TBI v8 RS model made at the defunct Van Nuys Cali plant.

Try this link.

Brady,

Thanks but when I check with the site below, they say it's a IROC???? \
Also, correct me if I am wrong, this car also has two black and grey stripes running from nose to the end. I thought that was a feature available only in IROC. I know I am not reading something right but just want to make sure.

Just because it has stripes doesn't mean its an IROC. Those are readily available in the aftermarket. The IROC has to be the most cloned camaro next to the 69Z28. I have never seen an 89 IROC without a TPI motor. I believe by 1989, they were only using TPI in the IROC.

Well, I was going to get this front-damaged RS (46,000 original miles) plus a parts '89 IROC/Z for $1,500 but I withdrew my offer. Please let me know if anyone happens to be selling a project IROC/Zs around Chicago. Thanks a bunch.

I had an 89 RS with the 305 TBI motor and added the IROC hood (with the louvers). From the front, it was hard to tell it wasn't a true Z. Very easy to clone for sure.

If you open the hood on the car, see if it has the round air cleaner on top of the motor that says "fuel injection" on it or if it has the silver tuned port runners instead. If its a TPI car, then it should be a Z, otherwise its for sure an RS.

1989 Camaro IROC-Z came with the carburated L03 305 v8 standard. TPI motors were optional. TPI was standard on the IROC-Z for 1990 :D

:bump: What...I'm kinda interested to see an answer?

We need more details.

Does the car have the standard square horn button or a round one? Does the dash have a Z28 plate or a Camaro plate? What size rims and tires? The 89 RS could only get 15". The IROC-Z had either 15" or 16", but were the IROC specific wheel. The RS had the 82-87 Z28 rim. Is there a wonderbar on the front suspension? They were IROC-Z specific. The VIN will not decode the RS or IROC-Z option.

If you have access to the car, does it have Z28 on the SPID label? If so, it's an IROC, if not, its and RS.

Easy way would to be read the RPO decal in the console (I think that is the location on those cars.)

Since I don't know for sure I'll take your word for it. Although I have never seen an 89 IROC with that motor. Don't know why someone would pay the extra money for an IROC and put a dog motor in it like that. Thanks for the correction.

I always wanted to do that to my 91 RS. I always loved the IROC hood.

There were no carburated Camaros in 89, the 305 and 350 were either TBI or TPI ,all fuel injected.

It is easy to clone a TBI base IROC, same motor as an RS, just look for a real 5.7 IROC with an 8 in the VIN for the engine. :chevy:
