Making Camaro History

I am not trying to advertise here in this post. Just passing on some awsome info on a piece of Camaro History.

"In 1969, Roger Penske, Mark Donohue and Ronnie Bucknum teamed up to bring home the SCCA Trans-Am Championship for Chevrolet. They drove 1969 Camaros that year, with the dark blue cars sponsored by Sunoco. This year, exactly 40 years after that championship season, another pair of drivers named Donohue and Bucknum will once again race in a Camaro wearing Sunoco blue colors.

David Donohue is the son of Mark Donohue. Jeff Bucknum is the son of Ronnie Bucknum. Both sons have well established credentials in the world of racing and, at the October 4th final round of the 2009 Grand-Am KONI Challenge season, they will join forces at the wheel of a brand new Camaro, built by Riley Technologies of Mooresville, North Carolina.

With a paint scheme created by ESBG Designs, the new Camaro will look very much like the 1969 model, which is as Chevrolet intended with the introduction of their new street version of the car."

"The Grand-Am KONI Challenge Bosch Engineering Octoberfest race at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) will take place on Sunday, October 4."

If you make it out be sure to stop by the hauler and say hi.

SMPdude 09-20-2009 08:43 PM

If you watched the Grand-Am race Saturday evening they showed a picture of our Sunoco Camaro at Riley's shop. It looks sweet.

Well the hauling unit is loaded and pulling out early in the morning and heading to Bill Rileys Shop to pick up the New Sunoco #6 Camaro. From there it will be heading to a track for it shake down run and then back to our shop. Should be home by Monday night. I can wait.

I'd love to see pictures of the '69 and the '10 sitting next to each other!

Old trans am car rule, those and the can am cars are my favorites at out local vintage races.

You know, I should be talking with Bucknum this week. I will see if he has keep track of his fathers old car. I am not sure what has happened to it, but I will do some digging and see what I can find. I know we just got our Hero type cards in Friday for the 2010 Camaro. It would be nice if we could arrange that photo shoot.
I think the race this weekend will be a wonderful thing in the sports car world and bring a revived interest in the Grand-am Series of racing.

Talking with Jeff Bucknum today at the shop and he knows who has the original Sunco Camaro. There has already been talk about trying to get a picture of the two together.

Well here it is in the shop getting a little more prep work before leaving for the Race.

We will get some good shots of the car Tomorrow as it will be getting loaded to head back to Bill Riley's for a few last minute fixes.
Turns out our car will be the only Camaro at the last Koni race of the Season. There is also suppose to be one (1) Challenger there also.

OH NICE!!! We need bigger pics! I just got my rims today and I'm going with the old Penske/Donohue blue and Sunoco gold/yellow styled theme. I chose the gold/yellow that was on the old SUNOCO lettering back then, like they ran on the Ferrari.

SMPdude 10-01-2009 05:33 AM

Bucknum and Donahues sons along with Corp Sunoco were very involved in the building and setup of the new Camaro. The Colors, strips and badging are as close as possible to the 69 Camaro, but still had to follow Koni's regulations. Things like decal placements changed a little. Like Hoosier had to go over the front fender well instead of on the door like in 69. Plus we had to use Bosch instead of Champion, minor things like that. But colors are the same.
Things will change up a little after this historic race this weekend.

Yeah they used a brighter yellow on the 69 Camaro for the wheels and accents. They used the bright yellow in some places on the Ferrari but had the more orange/yellow look elsewhere. Actually the colors remind me very much of the Blue Angels and their planes. Does anybody know where Penske/Donohue originally got the idea for the colors?

Actually now that I'm looking at more pics of the Blue Angels it's hard to tell the exact yellow; probably the differences in cameras. This shot looks more like the orange/yellow of the Sunoco lettering on the Ferrari. Beautiful color scheme though; I've always loved the Blue Angels.
