Zl1 vs pro-touring 69 camaro...

On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, David Freiburger meets up with Pro Touring legend Mark Stielow to compare old and new Camaros head to head. Mark Stielow is a GM engineer with a long history of building vintage, street-worthy Camaros with amazing handling prowess. His latest is the Red Devil, a '69 model powered by a 427ci, supercharged LS9 that tops 750 hp and 800 lb-ft. It runs a six-speed trans and complete suspension from Detroit Speed, and has won a number of shootouts with similarly built Pro Touring cars. But can his modified muscle car outrun the technology of the Magnetic Ride suspension on the new, 580hp, 2012 Camaro ZL1? We head to GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan to find out.

I thought this was pretty cool...

Exhaust and engine sound on both are great and love the flames exit the 69's exhaust at time 5:30 something on the vid.

as he said, would like to see this done with the corvette.

I'm thinking the ZL1 should have about 60 more hp.

Love the pro touring camaro's but has someone that has priced building one you could not even think about it for the price of a ZL1.

427ci LS9 motor ???? ~20k+
Detroit speed front subfram 7.5k
quadralink rear 2.5k
tremec swap kit ~5k
forged wheels ~4k

needless to say lots of coin.

it is amazing how fast his car is though. when they did the optimum battery shootout he lapped a bit faster than the Z06 the optima batties brought.

I think the Z07 and Zr1 would give him a run but they both would till be down on power that car is hauling the mail.

could not agree more. The nice thing about that is pulley, tune, cai will pretty much get you there. then just need to upgrade the cooling.

Do not want to lose my warranty. Kind of feel like GM should offer a kit for sale through dealers that gets 60hp without losing warranty. I'm willing to buy it and after spending 60k on the car kind of feel like they owe it to the folks that bought one. Then this totally badass car won't get smoked on the dragstrip or straightaways.

^^^ What he said. I want my warranty...for now

Come on GM, need a bump.

Wow, that '69 just might be able to hang with mine :sm0:

That '69 should be the blueprint for the next Gen ZL1 or Z28. Smaller, lighter, more powerfull, more retro. Turn that '69 into a modern production car and the waiting list would start today.

I agree 100%... I would do whatever it took to get one.
