Worst Car Brand Sold in America?

I was having a discussion with someone too busy driving his new 1LE to post this, so I'm going to do this.

What is America's worst car brand? Base it on whatever you like—quality, performance, whatever. I'm only posting real contenders for this, so don't expect to see Aston Martin or other limited production products.

Discuss, and vote!

LikaRokBowTie 11-02-2013 08:10 PM

Are you saying any car sold in USA or cars made in USA:iono:

:sorry: I'm sorry the poll took a while. This is about any brand sold in the US. Of course, keep in mind that a car that is built here isn't necessarily American. Follow the dollars, or whatever local currency those brands really use. :dizzy:

Even though I still like the Challenger a lot, my vote was for Chrysler based upon my personal experiences in the past.

Bhobbs 11-02-2013 08:30 PM

I'm going with VW. My sister had two Jettas that were garbage and anyone I know that has/had one, had issues.

DGthe3 11-02-2013 08:53 PM

Not on the list but ... Smart. Mitsubishi isn't too far ahead of them.

matt55 11-02-2013 09:00 PM

Listed Hyundai/Kia first and Chevy/GM last .
I have an idea how you feel lol.

Saab is out of business.
Nissan has some of the worst looking cars. Juke, Cube, Murano Crosscabriolet, Note, Leaf, Versa to name a few.
Worst in terms of business and product line? That would be Mitsubishi. I think they will be out of business soon.

Angrybird 12 11-02-2013 09:31 PM

Sorry but I can't see any that have terrible cars across the board. There are some crappy models in just about every brand as there are good ones that are sold today, now if you had asked of all time I would say Yugo....

Where is Mazda?

Not quite. They started building cars again a little more than a month ago. Don't worry, I thought they were dead & gone too.

I didn't know Hyundai and Kia were related. I voted Mitsubishi just because the only halfway interesting car they have is the EVO. I guess they still make it? :iono:

Volvos are boring too but they have the whole safety thing going for them.

I remember Volvo got caught in 1990 falsifying a commercial touting the roof strength of their cars. Although it was the advertising agency that did it Volvo had to approve it before it aired.

THE MEDIA BUSINESS: ADVERTISING; Scali Quits Volvo Account, Citing Faked Commercial

Rocked by a highly publicized scandal involving a misleading Volvo commercial, Scali, McCabe, Sloves resigned the $40 million account yesterday.
"I'm devastated by it," said Marvin Sloves, the chairman and chief executive of the agency he founded 23 years ago with Sam Scali and Ed McCabe. Resigning the account "was the right thing to do," he said, adding, "The executives at Volvo deserve a chance to put this thing behind them."
Scali's undoing was the "Bear Foot" commercial, filmed in Austin, Tex., in which a giant pickup truck with tires nearly as tall as a man crunched its way across a line of cars, flattening all but a Volvo station wagon. The advertisement was presented as a real demonstration of Volvo's superior construction, but the results had been rigged by reinforcing the Volvo.
The Texas Attorney General got wind of the fakery and sued Volvo, forcing the company to apologize publicly in advertisements that ran in national newspapers and pay a fine of more than $300,000.

VW
mom has had a beetle conv. And it was crap
Even used lemon law

she just got rear ended in her 2012 jetta
air bags didn't deploy, seatbelt didn't lock up

thinking about suing them for these two reasons

Pretty much every year Land Rover is at the very bottom of the J.D. Power list of number of defects per 100K vehicles with sometimes nearly double the problems of the next lowest performer. Funny as I see tons of them around being driven by the country club types, you know the ones that won't buy "American" cars because of their perceived lack of quality. I find it incredibly ironic.

midnighter 11-02-2013 11:28 PM

I didn't have real good reliability with my 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse back then. (Shifting linkage issues) Everything else I've bought has been decent. The Eclipse model has finally been discontinued.

And I remember cutting a guy out of a mid-80's Volvo wagon with the Jaws of Life at an accident scene.

Car was tough as nails, and probably saved the guys life after a head-on crash with a mid 70s Mopar.

They didn't need to fake a commercial.

Truck Norris 11-03-2013 12:37 AM

Mitsubishi..... so awful its listed it twice.

We're talking current offerings right?

Because I feel that the 4g63 is one of the best 4 cylinders.

Dyk-NO 11-03-2013 01:17 AM

I would vote for Suzuki if it's on the list and Hyundai and kia is in the same option lol

Overflow 11-03-2013 06:05 AM

I voted for Saab. Self explanatory.

My Maxima and Juke have worked great. So I know Nissan did a good job with them.

People get cut out of cars every day, does that mean they are tougher than others? My point was they make them out to be stronger than they actually are.. They will not stand up to being crushed by a monster truck....And that is lying to buyers.

Saturn definitely needs to be on this poll haha that's who I'd vote for. Got some advice from a mechanic once. "When it turns over 100,000 miles, park it on the side of the road and walk away"

243,000 miles on my dad's '93 Saturn SW2.

Hope she is okay. Airbags typically won't deploy if she got rear ended unless it slammed her into the car in front of her. Seat belt thing might be an issue but doubtful as well.

wocampb 11-03-2013 08:00 AM

You have Mitsubishi on there twice.

LostPony 11-03-2013 08:37 AM

Hyundai owns about 32% of Kia, and is listed as the parent company of Hyundai/Kia Group. After sitting in both at a recent auto show, they get my vote as both felt cheap and doors felt like tin cans when closing.

87GNX 11-03-2013 09:33 AM

I'd take a mitsu over any dodge/Chrysler ----> WORST cars EVA!

My parents have about 200k on their 96 or 97 SL2 and the car is still going. On the other hand, their 2008 Aura had all sorts of electrical gremlins before the 100k mark. They've now got a new Impala.

Angrybird 12 11-03-2013 11:58 AM

I have had more problems out of Jeeps than any thing else I have owned

dkp2LT 11-03-2013 11:59 AM

IMO - BMW's, Mini's - and then the one not on the list - Jaguar!

Brandywine5 11-03-2013 12:19 PM

There are some Nissan's I like, however the Juke is the worst thing I have ever driven. I wouldn't even call it a car. It was absolute horror. I never drove in a Smart (and never will). I have no clue what makes these things so appealing to some...to each his own...I'll stick with performance.

Scalded Dog 11-03-2013 12:49 PM

The title of this thread made me THINK that the article that I've pasted here would be cited... I usually don't give Consumer Reports much credibility, but hey, when it serves my purposes, my desire to show that the blue oval is inferior to the bowtie, then I'm all over it! Look what manufacturer made the list FIVE times here!

The 10 least reliable cars

These vehicles aren't a smart purchase

Published: October 29, 2013 10:00 AM

http://static4.consumerreportscdn.or...CMax_video.jpg

Just because a model is reliable, doesn't mean it is recommended by Consumer Reports. Five out of the top 10 most reliable vehicles don't perform well enough in our tests for us to recommend them. The opposite happens as well; some vehicles that score well in our testing are not recommended because they have below average predicted reliability.
Three out of the 10 least reliable vehicles have high-enough test scores to be recommended, but their poor reliability prevents them from reaching that recommended status. So, it's important to look at performance in our tests and reliability, because a high scoring car isn't always a smart purchase choice if it isn't reliable.
Our 2013 Annual Auto Survey reveals the best and worst vehicles in new car reliability based on our subscribers' experiences with 1.1 million vehicles over the last 10 years (2004-2013). Our data provide the basis for our forecasting how the 2014 models are likely to hold up, and reveals the most dependable used cars as well.
The vehicles listed below are the 10 least reliable new cars in our reliability survey. Predicted reliability is typically based on the newest three model years if a model hasn't been redesigned in that period, Models with an asterisk (*) are based on data of one model year only. Click on the vehicles below to visit the model overview pages to see how they performed in our tests and also view a more-detailed look at reliability broken down by 17 potential trouble spots. (Model overview pages are available to online subscribers.)
Least reliable vehicles, listed in order of Ratings score starting with the worst score.
1. Ford C-MAX Energi (Plug-in Hybrid)*
2. Ford Escape (1.6L Ecoboost)*
3. Mini Cooper Countryman
4. Ford C-Max Hybrid
5. Nissan Pathfinder*
6. Volkswagen Beetle
7. Cadillac XTS*
8. Ford Explorer (V6, 4WD)
9. Hyundai Genesis Coupe*
10. Ford Taurus (turbo)*

If you ever want to be scared shitless drive a smart car.... Worst accelerating vehicle I have driven in 45 years. Pulling out you better make sure there are no other cars in sight. I pushed down on the gas and the engine revved up but didn't move for what seemed like 2 or 3 seconds (may not have been that long but it sure felt that way).

motorhead 11-03-2013 01:39 PM

Not that I would pick GM because they make great cars these days, but why put them on this poll if you're just going to call someone a troll if they do? You also have Mitsubishi on there twice. I take it that means you want to sway people to pick them.

Airbags are not supposed to pop during a rear-end collision.

angryv6 11-03-2013 10:00 PM

I have two Hyundais, both over 90+ miles and still going. Yes there has been a few setbacks with them but what would expect out cars that 12 year olds.

FenwickHockey65 11-03-2013 10:09 PM

Honestly I could point out faults with every single brand on this list. Including GM.

thanks, she is a lil banged up, but will be fine. had to take a week off of work to recover
she declined X-rays, but says her chest is acting up
Well She hit her chest on the steering wheel on the steering wheel.

Why is this?
my mom hit her chest on the steering wheel pretty bad, Im sure an airbag would have helped

as for my aunt, she hit her head on the column of the passenger side
which has the airbag sign, so I'm guessing it would have been better if she hit an airbag as well
