so now instead of a tune you will have to replace the computer lol

JCunningham 05-21-2015 02:44 PM

there saying that they own the code (language) that makes everything communicate. You would have to change all of that to.

Basically that's all that will change if they say no more messing with CPU

This will never fly or past muster. Once you purchase said car, or let's say a Microsoft OS disc, you can and people do modify to their liking. If somebody modifies a car and the airbags do not deploy in a crash, that is their own damn problem.

Sigelitest 05-21-2015 02:51 PM

need to sell my airbags to pay for a supercharger just install foam on the steering wheel like my jet ski has.
problem solved lol

They're saying the code falls under protection of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and they want it enforced. There are hearings now to create an exemption to let 3rd parties (tuners) have access. GM is leading the charge against it. Wish they would spend my money on other things. An unauthorized incremented flash counter should absolve them of responsibility. However, I think they are more concerned with someone messing with safety SW than engine management.

Repost repost repost of a topic that was broached weeks ago about copyright laws regarding modification of vehicle software, ECU's etc.

Or wear a seat belt. Am I so old I remember a time pre-airbag?

Ugh when worlds collide-the DMCA is what is ruining software innovation, and now it's spilling over to gearheads :-/

A couple years actually. This had been talked about for awhile.

Another cool option would be if GM hire these tuners to work in their shop to be part of the performance divison. I know there are a few but going to the dealer for a dyno or whatever would be awesome and money for them.

Dmpsix 05-21-2015 03:26 PM

If they own my car then they can pay the insurance and all the maintenance as well.

Beardface 05-21-2015 03:35 PM

Smartphone producers already tried this, and got shot down pretty quickly by the US Gov't last year. I don't see the automakers being able to get away with it, either.

Vroom_vroom 05-21-2015 03:52 PM

They have been crying about this for years. The can't have it both ways. It will not pass. Now if your dumb enough to to tune a leased car I get that, but my title doesn't say General Motors under the owner box
