time between oil changes and first oil change
I'm so used to the 3,000 oil change interval of old cars.
My new Camaro is at 3,500 yet the computer says Oil Remaining 63%. Oil isn't clear nor black/dirty (in middle, brownish). Does this sound right? (just double-checking) Salesman said to change oil after 1 year, no matter what. -- Jim Brooks jbrooks3d gmail |

Newer cars/Oils can go much further between oil changes safely.
The oil monitor in you car does much more than just keep track of the mileage from the last change. The short answer is yes, you can trust the oil monitor (let the flames begin) for the most part. Change it every 3,000 if it makes you feel better by all means. I usually decide to have mine changed when the oil monitor reads 40% life remaining just to be on the conservitive side. And yes, it's reccomended that you change the oil at least once a year regardless. |
My first oil change was at 1500 miles, second was at 3500 miles and now I change it every spring when I take her out of winter storage. I only have 9986 miles on her and I bought it in October of 2009.

Had first oil change at 600 miles. Then every time i need it. Either right before and after a day of racing unless pretty new oil. Then every 3k otherwise.
Regardless of the method you use as i have seen some people who go 7,500 miles between. Always check your oil level weekly. that is not something the OLM will tell you. |
My 1st oil change will be done next Saturday with about 500 miles. After that at 2K, then every 4K miles.
Changing oil regularly is cheap insurance for your engine. |
I follow the OLM. But as much as it takes into count, it keep track of the time?

My car is like my child to me. I dont care what anyone tells me. Changed at 500, then 1500, then every 3000.
Mobil 1 and a KN oil filter. Yes, most folks think I am wasting money. I dont, and I am the only one who counts. |
In theory you can change it when the system says to but it doesn't account for oil consumption which all engines do. Some more than others. So while it may not be necessary to change it you should still check the level and add if needed to avoid any issues from a low oil condition.
That said I change mine every 2500 and always use Royal Purple. Regardless of what the monitor says. It's cheap insurance to protect the engine. I've done the same with my truck and it runs the same and as strong as the day I got it. :wub: |

I did 1,500 for first change, was free at dealer.. Now I will follow the OLM, it is there for a reason, I have followed it on all the vehicles I've owned that have had it since 2001 without issue.. Seems to hit the 20% mark around 7K on most cars.. Which is more than acceptable miles on synthetic oil. Once a year or by the OLM is your manufacturer recommended interval as described in your owners manual. Anything else IMO is a waste of money. |

I bough used, but I say, break in the car nicely, if not done so. I would say driving nicely for a bit, changing the oil, break in hard, change oil, then drive as you normally do, and change oil after the monitor says, or depending on your oil. Myself I use Amsoil, and I drive 3 miles each way to work monday thru friday, and some days I drive more for fun or other needs, and every so often(every other month or more) I have a 500 mile trip each direction somewhere. I change my oil about every 10000 miles. yes, 10k miles. I trust my oil, and when I change it, still looks somewhat clean. One of my friends(drives a 2010 mustang gt) use mobil 1 and we changed oil the same day, he after 4k miles, and me just after 8k miles(I was doing a 800 miles trip each direction and wanted a cleaner oil just because I had some money at the time. My oil looked cleaner than his. |
