How long will plasti dip rims last?
 

I am thinking about plasti dipping my 20" stock rims this weekend. I am hoping I can get 6 months to a year with them? Otherwise it might be better to powder coat? It just seems like $10 plasti dip vs $400 powder is a though call. How long did your plasti dip stay on?

I plasti dipped mine about two months ago. Haven't touched them yet since.

I highly suggest doing it. I plasti-dipped mine about 3 weeks ago and love it. If you do it correctly and apply 4 or so coats it supposed to last around 3 years. Its easy to touch up anyways.

Can you remove it easily if you had to?

Had mine on over a year and only had to touch up one spot. I did use about 5 coats, but this stuff is great. Just keep anything sharp away from them. Otherwise you are good to go. $12 for plasti dip is hard to say no to when it is hundreds to powdercoat.

I did my rims on my truck, just a few small touchups ...been done for almost a year and about 16,000 miles so far

If I had my choice, I would get them powder coated. That being said, the plasti dip is holding up real well for the $20 it cost me to do my wheels.

Yes, it peels right off if you put enough coats or if the coats are heavy. It not, it still comes off but you need to rub it off instead of just easily peeling.

I used brakleen when I had to redo one of mine. It dissolved the plasti dip, and it wiped right off. It did not hurt the finish underneath. It was sort of messy though.

what kind of prepping is needed on the wheels before plastidipping? did you just spray the spokes or the back of the wheel too?

None really. Just make sure the wheels are clean. I used index cards to put around the rim of each wheel to not get any on the tires and to have an even coat on the edges. I just sprayed the face of mine and a little inside the wheel well. I didn't bother doing the back since they already had a black finish.

Say you have chrome wheels and you live in a area that snows and the roads are covered in salt 4 months of the year. Will plasti dip protect them from salt and stop pitting.

Can you still clean duped rims with a rim brush?
