Just browsing through some of the other threads and I am overwhelmed by the amount of SS owners (L99 in particular) that are disappointed or frustrated with their speed or power or what have you. On the other side, every V6 owner on here has said how impressed they are and how much they love having the V6 motor. I have a V8 truck that only makes 270 so I can't wait to get the maro and feel the difference...anyone else seeing this besides me?

well....

the thing to remember even though the V6 may make as much HP or even more, it is going to make LESS TORQUE! Yes, the LLT has 304 HP but it has only 273 ft/lbs of torque... So while your truck has 270 HP how much torque does it have? That's the number you really need to look at...

People tend to look only at the 304 HP... which is simply, well.... silly...

That being said, I love my V6... but the thing to remember is you simply can't compare a 304 HP V6 to a V8 without looking at the torque numbers...

Vortec 4800 rated at 270 hp / 285 ft/lbs with a curb weight of 5485 lbs....I have ran it in the 1/4 mile before..best time of 15.5 with borla cat back CAI no tailgate and tuned...I still think the camaro is going to feel much faster being closer to the ground

Yep... definitely will feel a lot faster...


You give us a good example... on you Vortec 4800 the torque is actually MORE than the HP... that is very typical... so unfortunately a lot of folks thing that their 300HP is better than say a 270 HP V8... when in fact the 270 HP V8 is going to have more torque than the V6... and remember Torque wins races...

When my 2LT comes in, I'll be comparing it to driving my 96 Corvette LT4...330 hp and 340 tq. And only 3200 lbs or so.

Way too much technical info to go through but the point is this DI V6 torque curve is very flat. There's no sweet spot where you feel the most power or a spot where you feel the least. Its pulls steadily all the way through.

interesting... yes the torque curve is very flat... however I notice the car really starts to pull once you get above 3500 RPM or so... wonder how much the torque management system is holding back on the low end torque when you are in 1st gear... hmmmmm... lol

I notice the same thing, seems after 3000-3500 the RPMs build real quick, puts a smile on your face for sure!

What i pulled from your post was those with V8s are saying they don't feel the power and those with V6s are very happy with the power...I agree.

I have a V8 and to be advertised at 426...it would seem to me, that it would be a bit stronger than it is...but it is what it is. The engine has come to life more now than when new...over 5K miles...but still, I thought it would dyno at around 390 - 400 instead of the 360 - 370...so about 25 less hp than I thought it would be...GM typically under rates these engines...this one they seem to have over rated.

The L99...I think I would be very disappointed! I mean, why pay GM $1K for 26 (advertised...when it's really more than that) less hp...really, why?

If I had a V6...I'm sure I'd be happy with my hp!

You expected drivetrain loss to be 10% or less?

How is that even anywhere close to a realistic expectation?

I think it comes down to different expectations.

V6 drivers are more likely to be looking for "fast enough to be fun."

V8 drivers are more likely to be looking for "faster than everything," even if they say they're not that unrealistic.

We chose a car that we KNOW is not the most powerful thing on four wheels. We turned down the option of buying 100 more horsepower. We knew that. We can accept it. When my buddy showed up at a wedding this past weekend driving a 2008 Z06, it didn't bother me because I was never trying to keep up with the Jones's.

Second - quote for truth. Even those of us that want to mod the V6 for more power are doing it more because we want to customize the car than because we want the fastest car on the planet.
