Caliper question
If you have been following my thread in the Convertible section, you would have seen what I have been dealing with since April. During the last service visit, the dealership detailed my car (I forgot to tell them not too), and when I started to wash it yesterday, I noticed that my calipers did not look right (see pics). Is this something that I need to bring to their attention?

looks like they acid washed your wheels eating the paint from the calipers

I would inform them that you are unhappy their acid removed the paint from your calipers. There is no sense in doing acid washing wheels in this day and time. See how the bolt is rusted on the skate. I would look under there for other damage as well albeit possibly just cosmetic they should have known better. I would ask they replace or repaint the caliper as most people consider this part of the appearance of the car.

Thanks. I will give them a call then.

I spoke to the dealership, and I was told that all they use is soap and water, and I need to bring the car there for them to see.

must be some hard water ;) Soap and water did not do that

That was done with wheel cleaner that was too harsh and not meant for powder coated and painted surfaces.

I've seen a lot of cars like that. I'm sure it's a cleaner that caused it.

The wheels are fine. I need to get a couple edges redone from the prior owner, but there is nothing wrong with them (other than I need to clean them at the moment). I went to the dealership during my lunch. I spoke to the service writer that I prefer to work with, and she said that the service manager would have to make the call on this. She was not sure how that could have happened. The service manager took the car to the back to pull the wheels and get a good look at all 4 calipers. During this time, I walked the entire lot and inspected every SS Camaro I could find. Only 1 had the same damage, and the whole car looked like $***. (I also noticed that the ZL1 and Synergy calipers have a type of clear coat on the calipers that the standard SS does not). After I got back to the front of the building, the service manager pulled me in to the shop. We went over all 4 corners of the car, and he agreed that some type of chemical was used on the car. He also agreed to replace all 4 calipers. The parts were ordered today and should be in next week. |
Wow - congrats on the straight up service! Since your getting new ones you might could see if you could take the old ones to get painted - a nice bold red or blue would look sweet :w00t:
