A TOTALLY USELESS GADGET......A DISTRACTION MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE

Bonemaro 06-23-2010 01:02 AM

My drive home from work down I-94 puts me in a direct path with the sunrise. Wonder how well the display can be read on a bright sunny morning?

Thats wicked...Thank you so much for posting these pics, I'm still waiting on mine 2LT non RS with roof ordered 05/18/10. One thing that I was was wondering is if you can turn the HUD off when you don't want it on?

Should be an option to turn it off just like in the Vette. I drove a Vette around that had it, its neat for about 20 min or so.

Can you still see this with polarized sunglasses? Polarized sunglasses block all the glare from the dashboard.

I like it

Stopped at a dealer today, had a few with HUD in stock... the pictures indeed do not really show the actual size. it is sized just fine when looking at it in person. It did look somewhat far away though.

I was actually surprised at the number of 2011's that were on the ground at this dealer in stock. I guess they got most all of them in this week.

This is very neat. I was looking through craigslist and saw a 2011 camaro with hud for sale, i couldn't believe my eyes, so naturally i did a web search and confirmed that it was indeed a factory option. My 2008 corvette has hud and I'm very happy with it. Pictures of the actual hud display tend to make it look very small, you have to remember that when you're sitting in the car you're much closer to the display so it's very large and easy to read. Anyway, my hud is very handy, it displays all kinds of information, you can scroll through various fields to display just the data you want, you can tilt it to get just the right viewing angle, it adjusts the brightness automatically, and you can completely turn it off if you don't want to look at it.

for those who think it's distracting, like anything else you get used to it after awhile, but it's nice having that information right in front of you. right now, my hud only shows my speedometer, lol i don't really need to know how many g's i'm pulling and i don't need tach readings, oil pressure, etc, but i could see how that information might be useful if you were running on the track. it also flashes the radio station when you change stations, or it tells you what music track you're on when playing mp3s.

the hud might seem like a silly gimmick at first, but once you live with it for awhile it's quite handy

i can see how you might be able to retrofit this option into earlier versions of the camaro, as this has been a popular mod for the corvette c6 for some time. corvettes which have hud from the factory have a specific windshield for reflective properties, but people say that retrofitted huds work perfectly well without the special windshield.

it is nice to see this useful option offered on the camaro.

for everyone's info.,we just recd. a 2011 w/hud,at the dealership,i just checked it out and it is awesome, you can turn it off, however i would have it on all the time, you can dim and brighten, you can move it up or down which is neat due to shorter or taller people, can change pages(which shows diff.aspects)and when looking at it,it appears like it is out towards the front of the hood,....totally jealous but perfectly happy with my 2010,...and hope that someone finds out how to install on a 2010 and i just checked parts numbers for w/shield with or without hud,......and they do list diff.part numbers for one w/hud......sucks,

I took some pics this evening, a little closer in, showing the start up screen as well. I'll see about taking a video of it cycling tomorrow.

I finally received my car this Friday afternoon and was delighted!! The production seemed to go ok, but once the car shipped, it was painful.
It tooks weeks just to get the car delivered to the dealer. It is a 2011 2SS RS with a stick and it is the most fun to drive in at least 20 years!
I will try to send some pics, hope they show up big on the computer screen.
Thank you guys so much!!

It should look far away if it is done right. The light from the HUD projection is collimated (made parallel) so it appears as if from some far away light source. This serves 2 purposes:

1. The eyes don't have to switch between near and far adaption when looking at the HUD and the world outside

2. You can superimpose symbology on objects in the outside world. When you move your head, the symbology stays centered on those objects. I don't think this is actually used in the Camaro but it is very important in aviation.

If you wear Polarized sunglasses the HUD will appear dimmer when you are wearing them.
