All Hail ZL1. Now, let's talk Z28.

.

OK, I can live with the ZL1 not being called Z28... because I have to.

It's a done deal.

Given what we now know about the ZL1, let's assume that when we're well into production and this beast is selling well, they turn to focus their attention on the penultimate Camaro, the Z28.

What will kind of creature will that be, given what we know now? What form should it take?

I await your considered opinions.

It would make sense (if there is going to be a Z-28 added to the lineup) for it to be a Boss 302 competitor. Like the Boss, maybe a small power increase combined with a significant chassis/suspension upgrade to make it a better track car. Less weight would always be a plus too.

Camaro Freak 02-11-2011 07:21 AM

Z28?? Maybe in a 6th gen, but I seriously doubt you will see one before then with the release of the ZL1.

M6HuggerSS 02-11-2011 09:29 AM

i agree, the Z28 should be a track ready car like the Z06.

-general weight reduction
-optional stereo, a/c delete etc. (stripped version)
-light weight 18-19x11" wheels with soft rubber (black wheels)
-recaro seats with contrasting inserts
-back seat delete option
-rear gear options (4:10)
-staged suspension packages.... (coil-overs - sways - bushes)
-N/A LS7 500hp +/=
-special colors and stripes
-oil, trans, brake, ps, coolers
-vented hood (like ZL1)
-no fog's, no sun roof, no spare, WEIGHT REDUCTION

More MEAN less BLING
3600lbs and 500hp

needs to embarass the BOSS...
C-mon GM get to work on the will ya!

Stingr69 02-11-2011 09:33 AM

We don't get a Z/28 without a racing series to use it in. We need something like the SCCA sactioned series where the Camaro can compete with the other brands. JMO.

-Mark.

ZL1, no waiting

.

Yes, I am assuming Z28 would be on the new platform, directly posed to eat the Boss-pony for lunch.

The official announcement of a Z28 would IMHO be about a year after the ZL1 has been dominantly driving past GT 500s all over the country. Then more waiting and fervor.

Direct Injection engine perhaps?

Lighter weight definitely.

Yeah, I STILL don't think GM is done with Camaro.

Way to hold onto the Ace, GM.

You guys are Masters of the slow tease.

I do love the name Z28, but I can't wait forever. I will be ordering a ZL1 as soon as it can be ordered.

I am so glad they didn't ruin the Z28 name and used ZL-1 instead on the supercharged boat that is the ZL-1.

What hugger has outlined above is pretty much exactly my vision of what the Z28 should be and I'd buy one in a heartbeat if they made it like this.

Good job on the list hugger.

Sack Rat 2SS 02-11-2011 09:58 AM

It probably will be as specified by M6HuggerSS above. NA 427 sounds interesting. Ford and Mopar offered Race/Drag Pak, limited production cars to registered racers. The Challanger version came with fiberglass parts, weight reduction, no rear diff, etc. Very pricey and I believe only 100 offered from Dodge. Not too sure bout the Mustang.

On a side note the new ZL-1 has engine, tranny, and diff coolers like the ZO6 Vette. The upgraded tranny, clutch, driveshaft, rear axels and housing all will help both the ZL1 and future Z-28 survive. Worst thing they could do is make Z-28 the Auto tranny version of the ZL-1. Ha Ha, kidding. Main thing is the Z-28 will live again.

I think it will have many of the things outlined above, without LS7. I think that would be cool, but don't really see that happening. I could see LS3 with some more power and a lot of the chassis/powertrain improvement from ZL1, but I can't see another engine in the picture. That's not to say I would like to see LS7 in Z28. Of course - this comes from someone who didn't give any credit to ZL1 returning, LOL :)

Caliman93230 02-11-2011 10:31 AM

I would like to see a new set up, AWD TWIN TURBO V6, EXTREAM LIGHT crazy fast ten second car. Or should GM should stop making the ss and put all its attention to the z28 new light weight platform track read suspention next gen direct injected v8 engine

Black5thgen 02-11-2011 10:36 AM

Here's the recipe for the Z28 as I see it.

-Dry sump LS3 from the Corvette Grand Sport with a different cam
-Tweaked tuning for optimal HP, 450 as a modest rating
-GMPP Pfadt suspension
-ZL1 Wheels (like off of the SSX) and brakes
-ZL1 dual mode exhaust
-ZL1 carbon fiber weight savings
-Recaro front race seats
-Rear seat delete

Since most of the parts are already in the bin it would be pretty easy to throw this car together. 37xx lbs. and 450 HP is easily doable and would compete very well against the Boss. I don't think it was any secret that the ZL1 would have been the Z28 if the Boss didn't come out. It was called the Z28 for quite a while.

KMK454 02-11-2011 10:49 AM

I don't think the current platform can correctly adhere to the Z28's heritage... too big, too heavy.

That being said, it definitely needs to be decontented, lighter, lower, and more oriented towards the road course. It also has to have a naturally aspirated V8 with a high redline.

LOWDOWN 02-11-2011 11:23 AM

*Wet-sump LS7
*Driveline HD components
*ZL1 exhaust
*Composite body components
*Rear seat delete
*Forged 20s
*Non-MagneRide suspension upgrades
*1SS Trim

= less than 1SS Curb Weight of 3860, and a close-to-2SS price-point...certainly under $40K!

Think of it as a "certifiable/validatable" SS-X

brandotron 02-11-2011 12:09 PM

I just don't see it happening. I mentioned this in another thread, but the ZL1 isn't even supposed to drop until early 2012 and the sixth generation is said to start in 2015. That leaves almost no time for R&D on a new model.

I agree with what was mentioned above as well. This heavy platform is just not a good fit for the Z28 name. My prediction: GM will market the sixth gen as the return of the Z28.
