The LS7, last I read, is on it's way out of production.

It seems to me the LSA is the best bet. It's likely cheaper to build because it doesn't share as many of the exotic metals the LS7 and LS9 do. Also, it's not build at Wixom, but in Mexico, if memory serves. I think the dry-sump oiling system is another drawback to the 7 and 9.

Unless a Gen V makes it before Z28 returns, I think it'll be the LSA.

Search the thread Tran suggests though. There's no concrete proof of anything, though, either way.

What kind of exotic metals are those using? Beryllium metal matrix composites? I love that stuff, just wish it wasn't so obscenely expensive to buy and process.

Mostly titanium.

It would be GREAT if they could shove a GenV engine in it...but that would require some FAST development if it's due as a 2012 model. The engines aren't supposed to start production until mid-2011 at the EARLIEST. :(

So that would give them less than a year to design an engine, fit the engine, test the engine (and all drivetrain setups), validate the engine, and send it to market...

I would say the LSA.

The LS7 is much larger and more radically tuned, meaning it will get a lower hwy mpg than the LSA. GM would rather say "556 hp and 21 mpg hwy!" Than "505 hp and 19 mpg hwy!" It just makes sense to use the LSA. No exotic materials, no exotic dry-sump oiling system, and supercharged just like the GT500, which would obviously be its main competitor. The LS7 is on its way out, anyway. I'd be willing to bet money that if they make a Z/28, and it doesn't use a Gen V motor, it will be the LSA.

The LS7 will get better gas mileage than the LSA (it is rated at 26MPG im the Z06). However, if they make the Z28 as originally planned, it will have the LSA.The plan was/is to make the Z28 a GT500 fighter(irregardless of it's history).

LSA has already been tested in the Z28 Camaro.

Make it performance hybrid electric. (runs behind chicken wire stage).

LS7 is out.

LSA is most likely.

How about a twin turbo Buick 3800? hehehehe

I'm not so sure about the Z28's return...check this article out...

March 2011 launch for Chevrolet Camaro Convertible

Following a recent report that GM’s plans for a high-performance Camaro Z28 had been canceled and the Camaro Convertible was on hold, comes a little good news but also some bad. The good news is that the Convertible is back on track for a March 2011 launch, while the bad news – you guessed it – is that the Z28 is looking less and less likely to ever come to fruition.

Cost cutting at GM and fears that the German supplier of the Camaro Convertible’s roof mechanism was about to go under led to last week’s claims that the car was put on hold indefinitely. However, the supplier in question is still in business and has a new agreement signed with GM.

Furthermore, GM spokesman Terry Rhadigan has confirmed to Automotive News that production of the highly anticipated drop-top is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2011. He went on to concede that this will be a few months later than the originally planned late 2010 launch.
"We always thought it would be one year after the coupe," he said. "Instead we are going two."

As for the Z28, GM was planning to add the 550hp (410kW) 6.2L V8 engine from the Cadillac CTS-V to the Camaro’s engine bay in an effort to destroy any chances of the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Shelby Mustang GT claiming the title of ‘modern-day muscle car king’. Sadly, the Z28’s expected $50 million development price tag, impending 35.5mpg CAFE implications, and niche status meant it was virtually dead from the start.

You know - from what's been posted here, it sounded like Z28 was already done. Development was pretty much complete. Speculation, of course, but still offers a little encouragement for me

CNC's LS7-specific heads don't help either. That block wasn't exactly cheap either...

Lemans Blue with White Rally Stripes FTW. I hope they put the LSA motor in as originally planned. I already got a 427. I want a change.

nards444 07-10-2009 11:33 AM

to make a true Z-28 would just way to big of price tag on it, they wouldnt sell. personally they should have done away with the 1LT 2LT, 1ss, 2ss business. Dont get me wrong the camaro is great and is selling like hot cakes, and whos to say this would be any better. But I would have gone for a LS model probably a 225hp v6 that MSRP for 20-22k. Than one LT model that based for like 24-25, base would give you everything the 1LT options and you could add all the options you wanted from there. Now from there I would have an SS model. It would have all the options of the 1ss with availability to add any option you wanted and would sticker for 30k where it is now. Lastly I would have the Z28 which would be loaded with probably the 427 and would sticker for 36-38k.

McGruff 07-10-2009 11:52 AM

Who says it cant be a supercharged version of the LS3?

I'm glad GM went the other route and made even the most base model of the new Camaro fast & powerful. Let the other companies make their just-for-show anemic base models.
