Detroit News: CAMARO Back at Daytona Race!

Quote:

Despite cash woes, automaker renews sponsorship of popular NASCAR event on a year-to-year basis.
Robert Snell / The Detroit News

Excerpt:

GM provides fire and safety vehicles, pace cars and other vehicles for the race, as well as a July race at the track. GM did not disclose how much it spends on the Daytona deal or NASCAR sponsorships.

"It works very well for us in reaching one of our fan constituencies that we market our cars and trucks to," said Jeff Chew, marketing manager of Chevy Racing.

GM essentially creates a showroom floor on the speedway grounds each year and next month will spotlight the Chevrolet Camaro, Malibu, Silverado hybrid pickup truck and Equinox crossover.

"We're very pleased to have them back as a partner," Daytona spokesman Andrew Booth said. "We've had a great relationship with them, and they've been a great partner to us."

I know alot will be said about wasting money doing things like this, but what many people do not realize is that money spent is like free advertizing during the races. millions of people will see the cars and trucks zooming around the track during driver introductions, caution flags, etc. I have no problem with them providing vehicles for races, besides they have hundreds of thousands sitting on dealer's lots, they could just borrow them for the weekend from the local dealers (except the Camaro) and then the dealer can promote them as being used for the race activities, I can you see it now.. "Own the Truck Dale Jr. went around Daytona in"

Yep - relatively dirt cheap advertising. It really is a good business move to get back into this.

OK, now we need a Camaro pace car!

Better yet, lets picture before the race about 6 Camaros doing a few semi hot laps (3 V6s and 3 V8s). Yes one can be CGM. All lined up in a draft until the last lap and on the back stretch the 3 V8s pass the 3 V6s. Now this would bring some excitement to the new car!

Sounds like you're daydreaming a bit, but that would be awesome to watch.

It'll be well worth the wait, I guarantee it. I felt so awkward when I was looking at number 3's car. I thought they would think I was weird. I was freaking out inside and trying to keep from jumping on the guy and hugging him.

Training isn't enough sometimes.

I'm glad to see Chevrolet, (and the other deomestic manufacturers) remain involved in NASCAR, re; using the race to promote their cars, as Pace Cars.

Lord knows, the cars they actually race don't reflect that true vehicles the mfrs. offer. (But thats an old debate I won't get into.)

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Camaro as a Pace Car. The '69 Pace Car is one of my all-time favorties.

Speaking of Daytona, I go to the 500 each Feb., and Chevrolet's display is impressive! But this year, I'm trying to sell my 4 tx., for the race, so I may not see the display.
