Are the rear dash components as well(thus 9)?

Some car companies actualy count the 2 way rear speakers as two speakers each, in other words your rear speakers have within each a tweeter and a base speaker. So You count the center (1) plus the fronts in the doors (2) plus their components in the pillars (2) plus the rears (4). I am not one to agree with the way GM counts the speakers but there not the only that does that. If you are an audiophile you will more than likely change the entire system with the exception of the deck, due to the controls.

The rear are not components speakers, but GM still counts them as two speakers for each. Components speakers are when the tweeter is separated from the base and has the option of adjusting the db(s)

With the Boston system the rear speakers though coaxial are bi-amped. Meaning there are individual channels going to each woofer and each tweeter the amp digitally separating the lows from the highs. Usually with Component speakers only one channel per left and right and a analog crossover separating the lows from the highs. When speakers are deck mounted, reflecting off of the back glass there would be no advantage in using component speakers.

Ok, Thanks everyone for the responses as I was confused. I agree, they should have placed 9 seperate speakers if they're going to claim it has 9 speakers. that's ok because I didn't buy the car for the sound of the audio, I bought it for the potential sound of the exhaust!!!

what I don't get is how does the 6 speaker system only have six? what 3 is it missing?

Doesn't it have to have the front dash center speaker for onstar?

I disagree, it's all about the imaging and spacial surround. Sometimes, direct sound can tend to be harsh, depending on whether or not you can tune your speakers/sound. And coaxils have a resistor to block out unwanted low frequencies entering the tweeters, but is constructed directly to the midrange/midbass.

Coaxils are junk, 2-ways are better, components are best(for listening placements). Unless these coaxils are worth the rear fill, they're out.

What's with the 'subwoofer' option package listed @ $1500? Any specifics?

It's all a matter of space in the case of the camaro. Coax speakers have been popular in the aftermarket for quite sometime because they allow you to increase your speaker count without a major tear up to your interior trim. It's very cost effective for GM to mount the 2 speakers in 1 location.

The six speaker base system doesn't have the center channel, and the 6x9's are not coax.
