Picked up a new track toy/semi-project

1985 Toyota MR2 (Naturally Aspirated)

Needs a little body work, and there is a vibration in the steering at speeds, but aside from that, it runs great and pulls hard (for a basically weightless 1.6L anyway)!

AW11 platform, 4A-GE (20v Silvertop) engine.

Previous owner had done a bit of work already (based on his ad, conversation and of course checking it out in person):
Megasquirt tune
Headers
6 Puck Clutch
Apex coils
Monza exhaust
New brake pad/rotors/calipers all around
New windshield
ATE Super Blue Brake Fluid...

Probably more that I can't remember.

Really aside from the body and vibration in the front end, the car rocks lol and the whole deal was cheaper than a replacement set of the PZeros I ate through after a few track days!!

Your first winter project = Swapping in a second Gen MR2 turbo motor. After that you need to figure out how to keep the back wheels behing you. Light MR cars with decent power like to swop ends a lot.

Nice, i like those little things.

I bought one of these about a decade ago, and it was probably one of the most fun little vehicles I had.

I got four things to say

1) Those things look like fun cars. Congrats

2) That is one big switch for the headlights

3) You can tell they had drifting in mind when that E-brake was designed

4) Do each of the cylinders actually have an individual air filter? That is the first time I have ever seen that.

Fast and Furious

Its surprisingly quick and handles like a go-kart. I'll miss tracking the Camaro, and probably still will on occasion, but it'll be nice to have a dedicated car that I won't have to worry about.

24 hrs of Lemons car??

NASTY99Z28 09-10-2013 06:44 PM

That thing with about 200hp would be a riot to play with!!!

Silverlsinva 09-10-2013 06:49 PM

I do like the mr2 but the newer body styled ones are my fav especially the turbo models and they are hard to find cheap.

Atlas 09-10-2013 09:21 PM

Oh hell ya, 20V silvertop w/ITB's!! Congrats on the purchase! I've got a 94 Turbo myself, but would love to own 20v aw11.

Silverlsinva 09-11-2013 12:52 AM

Atlas Sweet car there man what year? and what have to done to it besides lower it and wheels?

Cynthius 09-12-2013 05:23 PM

Very nice vehicle Atlas, I didn't know much about MR2s until about a week before I pulled the trigger on mine, but I did take a look at newer generations but they were just out of my price range. Picked up the 1st gen for way under budget so I've got room to mess around this way :)
