DIY painting your engine cover
 

Can some one put up some nice instructions on how to properly paint the engine cover with heat enamel spray paint and clear. Im going to do this tomorow and want to see how I should do it.

P.S I know a little bit about painting but im not a genius at it.

I would like to know also. I think that the painted engine cover is a great eye catcher with hood open.:chevy:

Step 1: Scuff it up with some 600 grit sandpaper. Note: if you want it ultra smooth as the cover has some texture start with 180 and work your way up

Step 2: Spray a light coat of adhesion promoter then follow with a mrdium coat.

Step 3: Spray on a plastic primer a couple coats, if you see in defects this is the step to fix them.

Step 4: Paint multiple light coats of the base coat.

Step 5: Put atleast two coats of clear

Step 6: wait at minimum 24 hours recommended 3 days for the clear to completrly dry and finish with some rubbing compound for the ultimate shine.

Hold tight guys.My nephew is awesome painter.He just mixed up some RJT for mine.I'll post pictures sometime next week.Sticking paint on plastic's not as easy as one would think.I'll pick his brain later today.

YUP! The most important step in this whole process if the preparation of the raw Plastic. If it is not prepared properly you will not have any adhesion and your paint will be gone in no time.

Fact: Turn the piece of plastic over and look on the underside. You should see some coding, like... ABS, ABS-c, ABS+, etc... Use those codes to find the adhesion promoter you need to buy at Napa or where ever you shop for your auto paints... (Tip: you can call a local body shop and ask them where they shop. Most use local vendors for this stuff.)
