It all started with a skip shift eliminator...

I am finally documenting the build for once! What started as a bone stock 2010 SS has certainly snowballed into something interesting. Last set up to date was a V3 vortech with the stock short block putting 700rwhp out the stock tr6060 (dyno sheets to follow). As I imagine all those with some miles on a blown shortblock constantly fear the inevitable, I have decided to preempt the BOOM and pull the motor. What is to follow is my 416 forged stroker build, which will be fed through a YSI. Looking to see at least mid 900 to the back, but the swan song of 4 digits is calling and I might not resist. Here is a pic as it sits:

Pics of the tear down! I wish i had a lift... Getting the headers unbolted at the flange was a tough one. It is remarkable how strong the LS drivetrain is. So far, things are looking healthy as i dig into the motor.

Here is a crappy 1/8 mile pass. I need to do the driver mod very badly... good thing I am adding 250hp.

Finally got the motor plucked and out of the car. Its amazing how much clutter and crap is in these engine bays. I am happy to be removing the oil cooler, AC, ABS etc.. Coming next is to relocate the fuse box and PCM into the passenger cabin/glovebox. I will try to document the fuse box relocation carefully and create a DIY as I go. Just picked up about 30 feet of 20ga heatshrink. This is gonna suck.

Started tear down today, looks like on the advice of my tuner I will be swapping the ls3 for an ls2 block. Good thing I have one on hand. 402 stroke 9.5:1 compression yada yada... The long road begins now. The upside is the smaller displacement will likely respond better to the blower setup than the 416 originally would have.

Started reworking the harness. Factory coil wires are ugly as sin, but I've always liked the coil pack look so I didn't want to relocate them out of the engine bay. We must be proud to run EFI! Haha. I'm running the coil connectors from the rear of the cylinder heads to clean up the look. Lots of soldering to clean up the awful wiring from the factory. Here is a pic of the pass side loom.

Here is a shot of the connector. Heat shrink over the braid split loom cleans up the ends a lot

Just ordered this: Holley Hi Ram
Intake will be sanded and painted black with a red logo. And I might keep the stock hood and cut an oval to have the holley intake peek through for fitment. Have already removed wipers and plastic cowl cover to take a look at what needs to be trimmed. Likely will be able to create a new bracket to maintain the motor assembly to allow for a single drivers wiper (maintain street legal operation) definitely don't want this car to see rain, but laws are laws. On the fence between converting to a cable throttle. It might make it harder to set up WOT box and 2 step. Also collected -10an bungs and bulkheads to weld into the valve covers. Will rout through the strut tower to vented breather/catch cans behind the wheel liners. Not sure if the ls3 valley plate crank vent nipple is large enough, I'll see if anything has to change. The upside is I have about 6 inches of room under the high ram to stash my nice new coil wires and injector harnesses. More to come... |
