4th gen transmission question

i have a 99 camaro V6 auto and i was wondering how much work and money would it cost to switch it over to a 5-speed manual?

all replies are appreciated thanks

I've always wondered if you could do that, and I wonder if it would be costly?

My guess is that it wouldn't just include replacing the transmission only.

I don't know about the rest though.

depends on how much you pay for a trans. look to be spending around $1500-2500.

MrCool 02-01-2009 04:14 PM

Do you only need to replace the Trans.?

I wonder if you have to change anything else to get a Camaro or TA to a manual. (Google isn't giving me a straight anwser...as always)

Because my dad's 94 Camaro Z28 is automatic, and I was thinking one day weather it would be cheaper to buy a camaro like it that is manual or change the old one to manual. (Didn't mean to hijack the thread dobbins)

you'll need the lines and peddle for the clutch along with custom work to get everything working. so on top of the trans expect to pay between 2-3k more to switch unless you do it yourself.

this was written up as a 94-97 swap, but it should carry over.

MrCool 02-02-2009 07:16 PM

Hmm....that answers my question.

Right dobbins?

Dont waste your time...belive me. Its just too much work and you could just get a z28 or something like that for that kind of money (an older one of course)

I would buy another camaro

Lumina SS 02-04-2009 03:41 AM

i well sell it and go look for a v8 with manual transmission

dobbins67326 03-30-2009 11:59 PM

sry guys haven't been up here in FOREVER but i still need some questions answered.

i would love nothing more than to have a V8 6spd BUT

-im 17 still living with my parents
-insurance would skyrocket
-my 99 v6 looks and runs great

sooo. my dad has all the abilities to do the swap he said we could do it in a weekend but what parts do i need and where do i find them? (besides the obvious transmission)

the main reasons i want a stick is because i love driving them and driving a stick for a year would giving me plenty of experience before owning a 2010/2011 SS in a year or two

Then don't touch it. You just answered your own question.

It's a waste of time and money to do that with your V6. Simply because it's not a High power engine and there are lot of used V8 sports coupes.

Would be easier just to find a manual car and trade it. I doubt your insurance would go up if any. They base on the replacement cost not the power nowdays.

Insurance won't go up that much, maybe $5-$10 dollars a month on something that old if at all. I bought my '97 Z28 when I was 19 and only paid $30 a month insurance for liability.

I would seriously sell the car for $4-$5k and take the $2-$3k you would spend on the swap and buy a nice '98-'99 SS, Z28, or Transam since you're really want one of those.

Muh easier to start with a manual car to start with.
Remember, even the tranny has some computer controls so you may even need to swap out the computer to make everything work right.

Hi,
after having a similar experience/ thought on changing an auto Honda Accord to a manual, a few years ago, I would recommend not changing out your auto and probably trading it for a manual transmission - I seem to remember putting in the clutch pedal alone is a job in itself. But hey, its your call. Good luck.
