Coupe a Camaro

Barry Park, The Age, 31/07/07

No, it's not a Holden Monaro. Instead, this specially modified, two-door VE Commodore seen by a sharpeyed Drive reader in East Melbourne recently is most likely a test car using the wheelbase of the 2008 Chevrolet Camaro.

The car sits on a much shorter wheelbase than a standard Commodore, and the roof line is lower as a result. The rear doors are decoys in an attempt to pass off the coupe as a sedan, and the C-pillar is much narrower.

The rear overhang is modified as well, with a much steeper angle rising up from the wheel arch. Departing Holden general manager Denny Mooney admitted recently that Camaro mules were venturing onto Melbourne roads as part of the car’s development program.

The Camaro is the first confirmed global vehicle to be built on the Zeta rear-wheel-drive platform, developed in Australia for the VE Commodore. Its wheelbase is 109 mm shorter than the Commodore.

The Camaro will be built in Canada from late next year and is expected to use a V6 or V8 engine when it goes on sale early in 2009. The Holden Monaro two-door coupe is traditionally built on the same wheelbase as the Commodore sedan.

Don’t be fooled by the decoy rear doors—this is likely a test car using the wheelbase of the Chevrolet Camaro.

I just made a silly in my pants.

Mr. Wyndham 08-01-2007 02:27 PM

I wouldn't mind those wheels...they're sort of a cross between the Coupe's and the 'vert's...:D

Dark Knight 08-01-2007 03:36 PM

It might be my eyes....but it also looks like it has a staggered set up on the wheels like the concept does.

Hey guys, did some research on this and there is another car in a picture that looks just like that one. Here's the link: http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/29/g...more/#comments

Look underneath the big picture and look at the closeup of the design. The car in the picture is silver, but this one is white. :iono: :eyebulge:

There's three pages on that picture and discussion of what it could be. Take a read if you have a moment and see what you think. I'm not too sure it's a shell for the Camaro. And if you want to talk more about it, reply in the link pasted above. Thanks!

Nice info but...

AirGoya 08-02-2007 12:31 AM

So those are roughly the proportions that the camaro will be? If so it looks kinda big. I know the door is fake but thats still a big back seat

Mr. Wyndham 08-02-2007 01:19 AM

I doubt those are the proportions. They had to modify the Commodore to fit the Camaro's wheelbase. That's all. I wouldn't look to that body for any Camaro proportions. None at all.

concept has 21" inch wheels up front and 22" wheels on back. It could be the angle the pic was taken but it looks that way to me. But i know those aren't 21 and 22 wheels. look more like 18 or 19.

UPDATE: Is this really for the Camaro

not to bring badnews... or wrong news... cause i may not be right.

But,
I found this thread "Chevrolet v8 ss mule spotted in california" from July 07

http://my.is/forums/f104/2009-chevro...fornia-335035/

that says This thinly disguised Holden Commodore based Chevrolet with SS badgetry was spotted yesterday (July 12) just outside of San Diego, California. Practically, were talking about a sister model to the upcoming Pontiac G8 GT with the 362Hp 6.0-liter V8 unit. Unfortunately, GM people impolitely covered the nameplate of the Michigan plated Chevy mule so we cant be sure of the model. While many of you would love this prototype to be the rear-wheel drive successor to the Impala SS, were betting its either the Brazilian Omega SS or (most probably) the Middle-Eastern market Lumina SS.

it looks an awful lot like the mule we seen a month or two back.

Slap a spoiler on that and it'd look great.

boxmonkeyracing 08-27-2007 09:19 PM

def looks like the lumina. I've seen a few of those in kuwait. look pretty sweet.:coolpics:

TAG UR IT 08-27-2007 11:36 PM

^NOW THAT IS SWEET.

Mr. Wyndham 08-28-2007 01:11 AM

It looks like a Holden (that's neither a compliment, nor an observation ;). That's not the Impala...or at least, it better not be. Too boxey...Lutz said that there will be a "few" (meaning anywhere from 2 to a million) more retro-inspired cars coming up besides the Camaro...I was hoping one of the few would be the impala. :iono:

DILLIGAF 08-28-2007 02:47 AM

anyone see any resemblance of the cobalt in that car, i totally do. glorified cobalt.

TAG UR IT 08-28-2007 03:12 AM

Looks better than an Acura or Lexus

Mindz 08-28-2007 03:25 AM

The front is tied with the TSX for looks. I have yet to see the back/taillights yet.

Seriously...slap a spoiler (in good taste-not anything huge) on that puppy and I'd happily drive it everyday.

MerF 08-28-2007 02:14 PM

Holy crap that thing is sexy! I hope GM releases something like it stateside.

Jak 08-28-2007 07:21 PM

Damn, that things sharp. Yeah, a spoiler would top this car off, nothing huge, tastefully. Think I found a new car to fall back on if the Camaro does get priced out of my comfort range.
