As far as I know it just has to be DOT approved... No rollcage required ;)

I'm sure if you make a 10 sec pass a roll cage will be required...:iono: Trying to find out what those limits are..

...and at what time do you have to have a helmet? 13.5 or faster..:iono:

Revo1 03-06-2011 02:11 AM

All I have is a CAI and a tune- no 10 second passes for me ;)

Wouldn't rules like that require qualifying runs etc? I have no track experience, I guess I just assumed everyone would need a helmet. Allan already has his, and I'm pretty sure he's mostly stock as well...

CruznSS 03-06-2011 07:34 AM

Needed a DOT3 helmet for autocross at C5fest-I. For drag strip, they did not require a helmet.... but that was Georgia, Arizona may have different set of rules. If you can find a DOT3 you should be good to go. The group that set up the auto cross did have some extra helmets for members to use. Might be the same at Firebird. I'm bringing 2 helmets incase I have someone in the passenger seat! :headbang::headbang::headbang:

Asked my tuner today... said faster than 13.5 requires helmet and 11.49 a roll cage/harness and jacket.

My wife happend to be standing there so now I have to have all of it...

I'm not putting a cage in my car yet. If I'm able to get any traction on my street tires and make a low run and get parked then so be it. I'll still enjoy watching and talking with people. ;) I will get a helmet and try to find a jacket though. Was actually shopping for a helmet last night and found one that I really liked.

I never thought I would do a cage but the one Russ has now is sweet... just a 4 pt that you don't even notice. It's upolstered like the interior w/ orange stitching too.

Where did you find the helmet... I'm looking at a G-Force one

Russ' is nice and I would do something like that in a heartbeat, but I don't have that kind of funds right now. I'm sure it was a couple thousand for that.

I'll PM you a link.

Camaro21 ran low low 12's all day long at the first fest and never wore a helmet! But go on motorcycle superstore.com and go in the closeouts! May can find one for $30 or $40! As long as u gotta head cover they want say anything!

I'm all stock. But it's required for the Pfadt track attack. So, I just got the cheapest one I could get. It just depends on what you are doing. You might not need one for the 1/4 mile.

Motorcycle helments rarely meet the SA requirements for Drag Racing or road racing. Entirely different helmet. Racing helmets are going to be a couple hundered to start. Great idea though.

Mine was $50 total.

Fishdadddy 03-06-2011 07:11 PM

Hopefully none of you guys will have a reason to actually put the helmets to a test.

But, I would not go for the cheapest model I could find, when it comes to protecting my melon.

Just my opinion

I'm REALLY hoping to get a slot for Pfadt day... 1/4 is the one that makes Eme the most nervous, and also where stuff tends to get broken, so at most I'll probably only do one pass.

Here in commerce. Ga everyone with a street legal car wears a motorcycle helmet while racing! Don't think anyone wants to pY a couple hundred bucks for something used a few times a year, and they don't check them!

So Cal Camaro 03-06-2011 09:53 PM

When we did the drag racing at Firebird during the Super Chevy Show last October, they required helmets for everyone regardless of how fast you ran and checked for SA 2005 or 2010 certification during tech inspection. I think it was the tracks rule.

CruznSS 03-07-2011 12:01 AM

They were strict with the Dot3 sticker in autocross last year. If no sticker, no use helmet! Just fyi.

Milk 1027 03-07-2011 12:48 AM

Since no one will answer me in the Pfadt thread, is this ok?

I don't believe so... I think it has to have the year and or SNELL rating on it... the oldest it can be is snell 2000 or something close to that...

Bingo. Most tracks hae to follow NHRA or SCCA regulations due to their insurance. I know that here in Colorado they will check the interior of the helmet for the SA rating which is not in a motorcycle helmet. Here is the written requirements direct from Firebird.

10. Helmets: Drivers of all vehicles running 13.99 or quicker, and ALL convertibles regardless of E.T., must wear an SFI-approved helmet with a Snell rating of 2000 or newer. Passengers in convertibles running 14.00 and slower must also wear an approved helmet. (Note: DOT-only helmets are not permitted. SFI-approved helmets are not permitted if the Snell label inside the helmet is missing or illegible. In other words, a Snell-rating on the outside of the helmet is not good enough.)

As of February 1, 2006 all vehicles with an aftermarket power adder, (nitrous, turbocharger, or supercharger) running faster than 13.99 will be required to wear an SFI approved fire jacket

I did notice the web page was not updated since like 2007 and the nhra rule and the scca rule is a 10 year limit on rating so I am betting it will be a snell 2005 or 2010 rating to qualify.

NHRA and it looks like Firebird follows their rules so
13.99 helmet required
11.49 rollbar required
powere adders helmet and jacket required
