Camaro to be Launched in China as 科迈罗 (Ke Mai Luo)

科迈罗 (Ke Mai Luo) doesn't really mean anything, it's just a phonetic translation of "Camaro." It will be interesting to see how well the car sells in China's huge potential market!

GM release:
Quote:

Earlier today, SGM announced that Chevrolet will introduce the legendary Camaro sports car at Auto Shanghai 2011 in April. The Camaro will have a sonorous Chinese name — 科迈罗 (Ke Mai Luo). The Ke Mai Luo with a 3.6-liter engine will be priced around RMB 500,000.

In recent years, China's luxury sports car market has been flourishing, highlighted by the midsize luxury segment (priced at RMB 400,000--800,000), which grew 141% in 2010. At present, this segment is dominated by cars with European design. The Camaro, with its “masculine” styling, will be a welcome addition.

Additional details about the Camaro will be announced at the Shanghai auto show.

Hmm, interesting. What type of competition does a car like the camaro have over there. Mustang? Genesis? Or is it mainly 2 door sport beamers?

After watching a 15 min clip of Top Gear China (totally entertaining BTW) and reading this........I am just gonna call Communist China, Consumerist China from now on.

whitessrs 03-22-2011 11:11 AM

Yeah and everyone knows what happens when they sell something to a foreign country and they like it.... We suffer from it,our prices go up, and we have less supply. I say keep the camaro (an American revolution) in the USA!!! Just my 2 cents!!

I don't think the prices will go up here. Now in China on the other hand, it's probably twice what it is here.

Camaro5Fest in China??? :yikes:

SlowSS 03-22-2011 11:18 AM

GM will sell millions to that market over the next few years!

1o.f00t.570rk 03-22-2011 11:24 AM

Aftermarket...

So if they are only selling the 3.6 at this time, that means if it sells well enough we'll see more aftermarket demand and in turn support for that engine as well, right?

I'd be all for that for sure! :D

Blade 03-22-2011 11:24 AM

Jeebus that conversion comes out to $76,267 for a V6!!

How much money are they making over there? I am gonna look for a job over there!

One thing I want to know, is why change the name? Whats the point?

LAWMAN 03-22-2011 11:41 AM

Nice,hope it does well,

kbui 03-22-2011 11:44 AM

Happy to hear GM is selling these great Camaros overseas. Hope they sell millions... The more they can produce and sell, the better it is for the company and our economy; in turns will be able to invest in more research and development for better cars. GM is already doing very well in China with the Buicks. It's an economy of enormous scale. Let's just say 1% of their population is making enough making enough to buy these Ke Mai Luos and only 1% of these "wealthy" people will buy the Camaros, that's 150K vehicles for this ~1.5B people country. Are there any Chinese speaking members on this forum? Isn't "Mai Ke Lou" a type of Chinese dry sausage? :)

Chinese have a problem with the R's in their speech. LUO is the closest they can get to RO....I have Chinese friends that always have problem saying "fried rice"

TJ91 03-22-2011 11:51 AM

why cant they keep the name?
I love the camaro taking on new areas, but changing the name is stupid to me.
Do we change the name of import cars here for lambos or anything?
I know the fairladyz is the 350 here but I dont know, not liking the name change

HP Addicts 03-22-2011 11:59 AM

Chinese can't pronounce the r. It would be the Camalo.

They didn't change the name, 科迈罗 is just the Chinese name for it (in Chinese).

Overreactions can be quite funny.

I had a Fairlady Z in Japan! It was the 280Z here in the States back then ('90). Man, 120KPH seemed so fast on those tiny 2-lane roads!

There are 4 pronunciations and TONS of combinations. so it is possible.

=Stephens= 03-22-2011 12:30 PM

With the automation of the Camaro plants, they can build them over there and make a killing.

Think of how many americans buy a Lamborghini or Ferrari? They are probably cheaper in Italy than they are here. So lets make some extra money on the Chinese :)
