Fake Ferrari Testarosa

1 Attachment(s)
So, I realize this is way off topic, but it did happen at our Chevy dealership and I thought everyone would get a kick out of this.

This guy calls in and tells us he wants to sell us his 1989 Ferrari Testarosa. We tell him to come in. He brings in this (pic below). I start freaking out - telling everyone it's got to be a Corvette. There's no way it's a Ferrari. So I send out a sales person to get info on the car and the VIN. I'm quickly looking up images of a 1989 Testarosa to reassure myself I am not wrong.

So the GM comes up and I'm pointing at this Corvette/Ferrari and even he immediately says "That's a Corvette! We go outside and the GM kindly says "Sir, that's a 1985 Corvette." The guy says "Absolutely not!". So the GM points at the interior and says "Sir, that's a Corvette interior.". So the guy starts pulling out all this paperwork that says it's a Ferrari, etc...

Well, turns out this guy was duped on Ebay and the car was sold as a 1989 Ferrari. This guy was completely lied to. He was told that the car was made together by both Ferrari and Corvette and is an official 1989 Ferrari. It actually is sad that he was duped out of his money by some shmuck on Ebay, but how do you not at least do your due diligence and look into a car you buy for over $100K on Ebay?

WOW! The guy's got more money than sense apparently.

toesuf94 08-29-2011 04:53 PM

Bwahahahahahahahahaa...his first hint that it is NOT a Ferrari is it STARTED.

He paid $100k for that? Holy god..... Real testarosas are selling in the $40k range lately. Thats just sad. Only a fool would mistake that bondo based "ferrari" for anything other than a kit.

I actually thought of this when I saw the title of this thread. Very good F50 clone based on a 4th gen trans am. Sold for $40k IIRC.

I want to say he was about 50ish. He said he bought it a 'few years ago'. By this point he was very defensive though. We tried to be polite, but he got pretty hot quick. He left still believing he owned the real deal.

I guess that is what happens when a guy who knows absolutely nothing about cars tries to get into the car game. Even if you fell for the picture on the internet (from that alone, it is clearly fake to most of us), you'd think the Chevy 350 with a corvette emblem on the valve covers would have given it way.

Who the hell buys what they think is a $100K exotic without even running the VIN anyway?

You might actually succeed. Plenty of rich fools out there. The Eiffel Tower was sold once....actually, twice.

You know, at first glance that vehicle looks like a riced out F-body Mustang 5.0. Cars like that give a new meaning to the words "ugly" and "inappropriate".

We were discussing that for a while. We somewhat believe he could have been conned into paying that much. Maybe with fake bidder going against him to raise the bid?

We also thought that he was trying to increase the value in his vehicle by saying he paid more for it than he actually did.

TOMS1SS 08-29-2011 09:44 PM

Didn't TV shows used to cut Corvettes to make them look like Ferrari's back in the 80s?

There was a place in Los Angeles, a guy use to take C3 Corvette's and put Daytona bodies on them . Actually used real Ferrari parts i think. They used one in the first two seasons of Miami Vice. After that Ferrari apparently was upset about the car getting attention, and not being real. So they gave the production two new Black Testarossa's , which were then painted white ,because they photographed better at night.
On a side note Don Johnson was given a silver Testarossa by Ferrari in 1989, and he auctioned it at barrett jackson a couple years ago and got around 60-70K
